Construction worker finds €100,000 hidden under old bathtub

A young construction worker in Munich has discovered €100,000 underneath a bathtub while renovating an apartment, police reported on Tuesday.

Kai Struve, 23, was tearing out old bathroom fixtures in the Moosach district flat when he found the sack of cash in the tub casing.

“The honest young man let police know directly,” the authorities said in a statement.

Police investigation found that the large sum belonged to the apartment’s former tenant, an 88-year-old who now lives in a retirement home.

“Apparently the pensioner forgot the bunch of money in his apartment due to his dementia,” the statement continued.

The sum is currently at the Bavarian city’s guardianship court, meanwhile Druve will receive a €3,000 reward.

German law dictates that those who return found items worth more than €500 are entitled to €25 plus three percent of the item’s additional worth.

looks like the old guy couldn't take it with him!

I bet his Mommy is very proud of him, such a fuzzy little story. "what a sucker" Most of that moneys going to the goverment. See it might go into the old mans bank, but when he die's which won't be long, the goverment gets most if not all of it. If I had no family and I was in a nursing home with my brain half gone, I would only hope that some young man who would use for his future could find it.

How do you say re-tard in German

If you reported such a find to the police in the U.S., they would declare it to be drug money and keep it.

Good on im, one good turn and all that. I found a suitcase behind a tree on a little access road behind Luton Airport many years ago. Checked the contents and unbelievably the owners name and address were still in there. Found the telephone number via directory enquiries and rung her up. Turned out that the case had 'gone missing' at the luggage incoming but had obviously been nicked. Took it in to Stevenage poice station, explained the story to the desk sarge and it was duly returned but the owner never gave me one little thankyou, so next time I'll leave well alone

A person with morals and scruples does not need an explanation for doing the right thing. A person without morals and scruples would never understand doing the right thing no matter how it was explained to them.

Well, this guy surely proves that there are really cool people in Germany. Although the country has some dark places in it's history, I can personally say that some of the most wonderful people on the planet are from Germany.

Leave 20 Euro in your winter jacket, next winter you will find a nice surprise.

What if the cash he found was fake? He would have been sent to prison for using it. He did the smart thing. I think it is good that there is a known finders fee, it gives people hope that they can do the right thing and won't be left empty handed for it.

Hooray for an honest tradesman. Wanna bet that the reward is taxable. Hope that the Pensioner has enough brain function left to enjoy the rest of his loot.

"A person with morals and scruples does not need an explanation for doing the right thing."

Exactly. It's what you do when nobody's looking that makes the person.

If somehow you had direct knowledge that the money was, say, a drug dealer's income, maybe it's a different story. But a good person does the right thing because that is it's own reward. Being thanked or collecting a reward is nice, but it's not why you do it.

Knowing a senile old man can pay for the care he's going to need would, I imagine, make this guy feel pretty damn good.

@ LeonG you post was so typically Canadian. You justify the theft of someone elses money, shame on you! My mother lives in Canada and has dimentia, her so called friends took advantage of her for over $30K CDN. She is no longer capable of making those decisions with her money that is why a court gave me guardianship. You should be ashamed!
16:17 March 4, 2010 by nickel
I loved it that the guy returned the money. If he was my son I would be proud of him.

I also was impressed with the German people for being smart enough to codify the law about paying a 3% finders fee to the honest tradesman for returning the money. It reinforces the good nature of most people and rewards adequately some one who is a good samaritan and does the right thing. I think laws like this help the fabric of our societies. Congrats, Germany.

And the comments were as usual an interesting slice of life. I can sympathize with almost all the comments and understand exactly where we all are comming from. I am clearly no saint and have proved that to myself many times. What I do find interesting after sixty years of experiencing these things is that it is the times I didn't do the right thing that still bother me long after the benefits of those things are long gone. I guess my conscience bothers me when I have acted in a way that I was not proud of , or something bigger, who knows, but I would be willing to bet that our respectable German construction worker will proudly tell this story for the rest of his life. Maybe there is something to this "golden rule" thing after all.

Tollermann, how is it typically Canadian to steal exactly?
21:32 March 4, 2010 by tollermann
Well TALONX, you tell me...why would a CDN talk about their vaunted socialist system but try and hide their "black money", insist on getting paid under the table (to avoid taxes) or try and circumvent import duties. All in a good honest Canadian's day of work!

Q: How do you say re-tard (sic) in German?"

Answer: "jon seligman"

Also, "Internationalwatch" is a synonym.

Man finds 100,000 euro stashed in bathtub.

Police given the 50,000 euro by the finder.

Courts now want to find the owner of the 10,000 euro.

Late breaking news! Court awards the found 1000 euro to the owner, a patient in a hospital.

All is well!
09:54 March 5, 2010 by Talonx
Tollermann, oh of course that obviously means that typically Canadians steal, that or your paranoid and crazy, just kind of living in your own little world.
16:11 March 5, 2010 by tollermann
Talonx no, I call them like I see them. Canadians are famous for their holier than though attitude, sort of like a worlds "Moral Superpower." All this from one of the biggest British Empire supporters. Can you say Boer war, WWI, WWII, etc.
