All-time October low recorded in Bavaria

Published: 20 Oct 09 16:36 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20091020-22693.html

Meteorologists on Tuesday morning recorded the lowest ever October temperature in Germany, as the mercury dipped to a chilly -24.3 degrees Celsius in Bavaria’s Berchtesgaden national park.

The bitter cold was measured at the Funtensee, a notoriously frosty lake high in the Bavarian Alps. Jörg Kachelmann from the Meteomedia weather service said conditions overnight were ideal “with brisk cold air flowing in over freshly fallen powder snow.”

Kachelmann said the alpine sinkhole could register temperatures as low as -55 degrees in the middle of winter by similar conditions, making it in his estimation the coldest spot in Germany. But he said the Funtensee was likely to be a balmy 35 degrees warmer by Wednesday, as the Alpine Föhn wind is expected to push temperatures up to 10 Celsius.

The rest of the country will also warm up slightly midweek, according to the DWD German Weather Service. The Föhn will heat up the southern edge of Germany to 17 degrees, while the eastern half will be lucky to see seven degrees. Most regions will be cloudy, but are likely to stay dry. Overnight lows will drop to six degrees in the northwest to zero in the southeast.

The northern and eastern Germany will remain dry on Thursday, but will showers threaten the southwest. Highs will range between nine and 17 degrees.

A slight exaggeration with the -55 degrees claim. The lowest temperature recorded at Funtensee was -45.9°C on 24 December 2001 ? admittedly still pretty chilly.

SMALLTOWNBOY- That would be relevant if they were noting the lowest DECEMBER temperature - this is about the lowest ever OCTOBER temperature. Sometimes actually reading ALL the words is helpful.

This should help to put the lie to fact that blaming CO2 for "global warming" is a lie, nonsense and only new way to gain more regulatory power over people and tax them to death.

CO2 is a trace gas in the atmosphere and insignificant in every respect. It is a poor absorber of IR from sunlight compared to water vapor which has 200 times as many molecules and absorbs six times better for a net heating effect that is 1200 times that of carbon dioxide. But, carbon is common in all fuels and demonizing is a path to power. It is just that simple.

You have again been lied to just as you were with Freon, the finest industrial chemical ever made. Molina and Roland were given the Nobel prize in chemistry for a reaction never observed in nature nor done in the lab because the thermodynamics they claimed is backwards. These two should have flunked Gen. Chem I, but politics got involved and they laughed all the way to Oslo and then to the bank.

The truth will set you free and ignorance will be the death of you. Freeze on...

Taking a single, local weather event and using it as evidence for global climatic changes (or lack thereof) is completely and utterly ridiculous.

try reading the sentence again. They were speculating what the lowest temperature might be if similar conditions had happened in December instead of October.

AL Gore must have visited the area.

Bavaria is not the world! Though some Bavarians might tell you a different story-
you're right. Bavarians think Bayern is the centre of the universe with everything else revolving round it.

This is not just happening in Bavaria - I know it would please some of you if it was purely a local phenomenon, as this would fit nicely into the global warming theory/hysteria, but the facts ARE the facts. October records have been shattered at numerous locations in the United States as well. Not only have several record cold temperatures been broken, but several locations recorded the coolest summer in over 100 years. Two ski resorts in Colorado have enjoyed their earliest opening EVER. Real science involves debate, but Al Gore and his supporters do not want to consider these cold temperatures because they call his entire argument into question. We should consider that globally, temperatures have NOT risen since 1998, and have, in fact, dropped. Consider the facts before you support policies that will absolutely ruin the economy of every industrial country in the West, including that of Germany and the United States. In the mean time, someone should send al gore to Bavaria to see it for himself!

Probably you did not experience the hot summer of 2003. It was the first of its kind in Europe. As per the Wiki article, more than 37,451 people died as a result.

I think the term global warming is badly chosen. The thing is that greenhouse gasses make climate change, therefore rising temperatures in certain places and dropping temperatures in other places.

But it's not all about the temperature either, the term does not include excessive rainfall or increased hurricane activity for instance.

I think global warming should be renamed:

maybe global messed up climate process?

or happening to the climate worldwide?

no wait that's too long

maybe we should name it Al Gore, sort of sounds like El Nino!

'we have to cut back greenhouse emissions to stop Al Gore from happening' ha ha!
16:26 October 22, 2009 by Small Town Boy
It's only called "global warming" by people who don't know what they're talking about (see various examples above; note how they all signed-up specially to spout their drivel). The correct term is "climate change".

Why a minor news story on a mildly-interesting weather event has to turn into a debate on climate change is beyond me. The two events are completely unrelated.

We better start working on our English?

Did you notice when you first logged on to this site that this board is for English speaking people in Germany, mostly expats?

Calling us all Germans shows your grasp of the language and understanding of basics.

Now piss off ya muppet.

Oh and have a nice day y'all.

That's the problem; he found The Local, not Toytown. It's The Local that's funnelling all these idiots onto the forum.

"Taking a single, local weather event and using it as evidence for global climatic changes (or lack thereof) is completely and utterly ridiculous."

Small Town Boy, that's true enough - if it were only in one locality, it would be ridiculous. However, regions across the world are reporting lower than usual weather trends and record lows (North America and Europe both spring immediately to mind). That sounds indicative of a more global trend to me.

Glad to see educated people out there with the ability to see through the global warming hoax!
13:48 October 23, 2009 by Hutcho
Yeh, these lower temperatures that you speak of must be why the pack ice in the North West Passage will have receded so much in the next couple of years it will be open to shipping for the first time in recorded history.
15:31 October 23, 2009 by SmittyBoy
Or at least that's the prediction. What's gonna be the excuse when it doesn't happen?
15:40 October 23, 2009 by Pas
Oh joy. We seem to have found some of the USA's less well educated. You gotta hope they all live on low lying land near the coast.
16:25 October 23, 2009 by Hutcho
To suggest that global warming is not happening is just plain stupidity.

There are a multitude of facts that prove it. If you don't believe these facts, or feel like you should speak out against global warming without first informing yourself about them, then you are quite simply an idiot.

Why it is warming is certainly up for debate, but that it is indeed warming is not.

I suspect the whole "global warming/climate change" thing is a scam. That said, I still believe in listening to all points of view without ad hominem attacks on people I disagree with. For a rational discussion of the issue, I go to Anthony Watts' blog: http://wattsupwiththat.com/ As you will soon learn at Anthony's blog, there is a lot of evidence that disputes what our political elites say about the effect of CO2 on the Earth's climate. Mr. Watts and friends have also gone to a huge amount of effort to do what should have been done before grandiose claims were made about global warming: they physically visited and documented most of the sites in the US where climate is supposedly measured. Their findings are amazing. Most sites are so poorly built and located that there is no way any good data could result from them. See the data here: http://www.surfacestations.org/

haha. I love the chants of 'Muppet' and 'Uneducated'. I'm sorry my fellow Germans and indoctrinated ex-pats. Please don't mind if we still think for ourselves and consider more sides of an issue than the 'liberal' govt. party line. I know it pains you so. The fact however remains, that 'Global Warming', or whatever the weather happens to be doing at the moment, aka 'Climate Change', is just a brilliant new Sin Tax. If you can be made to feel guilty, the Govt. will tax your guilt. This is a wonderful hand-me-down policy from the Roman Catholic Church.

But, you guys just keep throwing your superior intelligence at us. It makes us laugh.

'The sky is falling, the sky is falling' Better give the Govt. everything you have, Germany. they'll make it all better!
