Poisonous snake bites British tourist in Bavarian supermarket

The relaxing Bavarian holiday of a British tourist recently took a dramatic turn after she was bitten by a poisonous snake in an Oberammergau grocery store.

According to police in the small town in southern Bavaria, the 44-year-old woman from England was walking into the discount supermarket when she felt a sharp pain in her foot. In a freak attack, the snake bit her big toe after the woman unwittingly stepped on the common European viper, or adder.

“The snake managed to get a hold of her toe and then sneaked away just as she looked down. It was a small bite but it did manage to get some of its poison through the bite,” Officer Walter Schmidt told The Local on Tuesday, describing the incident that happened last week.

The woman spent one night in hospital as a precautionary measure and was released the next day.

“At no time was there any danger to her life,” said Schmidt, who was called to the scene along with ambulance crews.

The 25-centimetre snake was then caught by the owner of a nearby reptile house, Thomas Lücke, who released it in the Pulvermoos nature area near the neighbouring town of Unterammergau.

“In the 19 years I’ve had the reptile house in Oberammergau, this is the first time that I’ve had to catch a European viper,” Lücke told the regional daily Merkur.

Schmidt confirmed that the snake attack was a very unusual case for the region.

“We have no idea why the snake was in front of the store – you don’t typically see them sitting out in the sun and it could be that it was looking for a cool refuge,” he said.

The bite of the European viper (Vipera berus) is known to be very painful but not always poisonous. The largest specimens of the protected species can grow up to 90 centimetres.

Depending on which part of the UK she was from the snake could be dead from an overdose of something.
16:19 August 18, 2009 by Bell the cat
If she was the sort of Brit that visits Oberammergau, I doubt that the snake would overdose on anything other than sweet sherry ...

In a freak attack, she had unwittingly stepped on a common European viper, or adder, causing the snake to bite her big toe in retaliation.
Err.... so stepping on a snake is now considered a freak attack?

edit: bad English making it seem like the woman attacked the snake <sigh>

Well how often does it happen that an English tourist treads on a snake in a German shop?

Pretty much a freak occurance in anyones book that.

@Steve192 - unless it was Aldi

¦quot; We have no idea why the snake was in front of the store you don¦#39;t typically see them sitting out in the sun and it could be that it was looking for a cool refuge,¦quot; he said.

So according to German shop keepers Snakes do not sit in the sun ???

See? I told you, discount food can be bad for your health. Up to being poisoned.

I really do hope the snake is okay.

NEWSFLASH...UPDATE...The supermarket is using trained snakes to catch the staff if they take unlicenced toilet breaks. A checkout girl was quoted as saying "the bosses are always threatening us with stuff like that, and giving our jobs at the till to someone else and replacing us with better adders."

There are lots of snakes in germany... Some have tits too!!

Is this German humor or do I detect dislike of outsiders. No doubt running into a snake in a shop is unexpected, to say the least. However, reading the posts, one gets impression there is not much empathy for this poor woman who is on holiday, away from home and gets bitten by a snake. There are a lot of German tourist in Canada this summer. I can assure you if anyone of them run into a problem while traveling across Canada many Canadians would go out of their way to help.
04:53 August 19, 2009 by nepo77
Yeah serbianbelle, but your talking about Germans and Canadians. This is about the British -complete different story ;)
08:49 August 19, 2009 by Bell the cat
serbianbelle, you need to get a bit used to TT. We don't view this women as an 'outsider' as quite a few of us posting here are actually Brits too. But us Brits sometimes see the humour in the oddest things. Its not hostility but a gentle chuckle at the ups and downs of life.

So a brit walks into discount store.........there's definately a joke in there somewhere.

If it was a Tenglemann store, she will get Bitten at the checkout too!
14:35 August 20, 2009 by jack3810
maybe the british could resume nighttime precision bombing to cut down on the poisonous snake population in bavaria. after all, bavaria does have a history of fostering poisonous things.
15:01 August 20, 2009 by Paniscus
OK- someone, somewhere will get pissed with me, but I have to say it (being an ex zookeeper)... snakes are not poisonous! They are venomous. There is a differnce between venom and poision. But this is an interesting topic nontheless, as I'm sure this is a rare thing in Bavaria... or at least I hope :-)

I once saw Till Lindemann in an interview talking about how Germans eat snakes and lizards- deep fried. And who says Germans have no sense of humour?

*snakes with tits? Hmmm....this wouldn't be teutonic snakes?
15:18 August 20, 2009 by RainKing
(attached image) I have had it with these muthafuckin snakes in this muthafuckin Aldi.

So, maybe this tendency to pair socks 'n' sandles is way of protecting toes from snake bites?

Should you wish to try snake, American rattlesnakes were recently spotted in the frozen meat section at Frische Paradies. It might make an interesting addition to a summer BBQ... Given that the store caters to the restuarant trade, has anyone seen it on offer at a restaurant?

I would like to point out that as an Environmental management student, i could not ignore the heading of this article is wrong... Snakes can not be poisonous. They are venomous.

Poison is a toxin that causes its effect through ingestion or absorption while venom is a toxin that causes its effect through administration via a specialized delivery system. Snakes are venomous since the toxin is delivered via specialized apparatus while poison arrow frogs are poisonous since the toxin is absorbed.

This is wonderful. I love the outlook on this. My ol' British and German genes, lol.

Here in the US the poor snake probably would have been clubbed to death several tiimes before being brought to the local zoo to be identified.

You have no idea how many innocent, totally harmless, beautiful little DeKay's brown snakes (small, beneficial snakes that eat slugs etc in the garden) get chopped up by hysterical people before beng presented for ID (fearing them to be some fiendish threat). Geesh.

Shoot first and ask questions later.

Don't know about snakes on a plane but I am sure I saw an advert for a film called 'Ant on a plane' - looked like a mix of snakes on a plane and Phase IV.
18:12 August 21, 2009 by serbianbelle
Birdpond you are so right. I have seen children throwing rocks on garter snakes after they had eaten and were too slow to move. Or batting a wasp nest hanging off a tree branch, even when it was far from homes. I have had wasp nest in my garage many times over the years, wasps used to fly in and out never bit anyone of us. We didn't disturb them in any way. We need to teach children and adults to be less homo centric. This idea of dominion over every living thing is outdated. We had dominion and where are we now? We may disappear as a species because of this attitude.
