Zoo forced to rename primate called 'Obama'

Published: 10 Jul 09 14:31 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20090710-20513.html

Facing accusations of racial insensitivity, the Dresden Zoo has been forced to rename a baby primate called ‘Obama,’ according to information obtained by The Local on Friday.

ADVERTISING
This spring the zoo in the eastern German city named a newborn mandrill “Obama” after freshly inaugurated US President Barack Obama. But an advocacy group for black Germans demanded that the primate be renamed this week, calling the zoo’s choice racist.

“It’s a catastrophe,” director of the Initiative for Black Germans (ISD) Tahir Della told The Local on Friday. “Black people continue to be confronted by associations with the animal kingdom and primitivity.”

The baby mandrill, which belongs to a species closely related to the baboon, was born on March 23, Manuela Collmar, zookeeper at the zoo’s “Afrika Haus,” told The Local earlier this week. Each year the zoo names all newborn animals beginning with the same letter.

“This year they all begin with ‘O,’ and one of the zookeepers chose ‘Obama’ – it was meant to be positive and an honour in light of his visit to Dresden in June,” Collmar said, adding that neither she nor her colleagues were aware of the history of using monkeys to caricature and ethnically stereotype black people.

In an email response to ISD director Della’s complaint about the mandrill’s name on Thursday, zoo director Karl-Heinz Ukena echoed her sentiments.

“The possible associations of this name choice were not considered, and the racist charicterisation – particularly with the background that the US president recently visited Dresden – was far off,” Ukena wrote, adding that the zoo had meant to express its “esteem” for Obama.

Ukena went on to apologise for any “irritation” the name had caused.

The ISD responded with a request for the zoo to take the issue seriously and rename the mandrill.

The request at first went unanswered, and calls on Friday to the zoo revealed that Ukena had left his office on holiday.

However, later the same day, the zoo told The Local it had reconsidered and would rename the baby primate.

The zoo director was contrite about any possible offence taken, his secretary Annette Heine said.

“We will change the name to 'Okeke,' which means 'he who was born on market day',” she said.

Munich-based Della said he was surprised by the zoo’s change of heart, calling it a “small miracle.”

He said he has made “countless” similar complaints that have been repeatedly brushed aside.

“Most people think it’s enough to qualify offensive content by saying they didn’t mean it that way,” Della told The Local. “For a long time racism has been associated with the Third Reich, but Germans need to understand that there are other forms. There are so few black people in the country, however, that they see it as a small problem.”

The Dresden Zoo’s choice of the name ‘Obama’ for the mandrill is a sign of what Della calls a “subliminal racism” that exists in the country.

Indeed, just last week the United Nations’ special rapporteur for racism Githu Muigai said Germany needs to do more to tackle the daily discrimination of ethnic minorities.

Living in a less diverse society than in the United States, Germans have often struggled to avoid racial pitfalls and cultural insensitivity. Earlier this year a company was criticised for selling chicken nuggets called “Obama Fingers,” in an apparent reference to African-American fondness for fried chicken.

But there have also been gaffes in America.

This February, The New York Post was slammed for running a political cartoon showing police officers shooting a chimpanzee while saying: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill,” just as Obama was having difficulty with the US Congress on efforts to boost the economy.

The paper said it had not intended to appear racist and was merely referencing a recent incident with a violent chimp in Connecticut.

They are free to name it after me. I like monkeys. Hell, I am one.
18:22 July 10, 2009 by Owain Glyndwr
The connotations are clear to anyone with half a brain, Lestat. The fact that you don't get it speaks volumes. Remember the monkey chants at the Spanish grand prix?
18:27 July 10, 2009 by Bipa
Gosh, that does sound quite silly. Should I be upset because there's a polar bear in Nuremberg called Vera? After all, I'm white...

But frankly, I think only warthogs should be named after politicians
18:33 July 10, 2009 by Owain Glyndwr
There is a history of racists comparing black people to monkeys, so i think it is a bit insensitive, although most probably not meant in a racist way at all. Germans probably wouldn't think of the link. Like i mentioned above, the Spanish make monkey noises as a racist way to taunt Hamilton, Seymonds, the black australian cricketer, was taunted by the Indians who called him a monkey. Old pictures portray "negroes" as monkeys. So yeah, the connotation is definately there.

Worst still, George W Bush was comapred to a chimp in many photos, so obviously Obama won't want to be compared to something that was compared to Bush.

Please change attained --> obtained in the first sentence. Thank you.
18:45 July 10, 2009 by Owain Glyndwr
Gen, why? to attain can mean "come into the possession of", which fits the use above.

The ONLY people who would see racial connotations ARE racial. It's called reverse prejudice. And, it is YOU who see everything in black and white, because it is YOU who are LOOKING for something to be offended about.

If I call my black cat Oprah, ONLY a prejudiced person would take offense.

Should the monkey turn out to be a dishonest, selfish ape, call him Bush. Nobody will think it's racial.
18:52 July 10, 2009 by Owain Glyndwr
black cats don't have a history of being associated with racism. Images of black people as monkeys do. You don't have to go looking for it, it is there. see my examples above. There was even a trend in science (now referred to as scientific racism) where, for example, skulls of "negroids" were compared to monkeys in an effort to show they were inferior or less human. like i said, i don't believe for one minute that there was any racist intent by the zoo but i can understand why people might feel it is insensitive.
20:27 July 10, 2009 by wxman
As usual, it's OK to ridicule Bush but you better leave the lawn jockey alone.
20:44 July 10, 2009 by Oblomov
Well, I don´t believe that the link between black people and monkeys as a racial slur is as obvious in Germany as it may be somewhere else. As far as I know some black football players have been taunted with ape noises in German football stadiums as well, but the player who was most widely and for years taunted with ape noises was Olli Kahn, therefore it isn´t that obvious there either.
20:47 July 10, 2009 by mlovett
They should rename it George; Bush is the monkey, after all!

Read about it here -- http://blog.editage.com/index.php?q=node/77
The verbs "obtain" and "attain" both mean "to gain or achieve something." However, the verb "obtain" is typically used to denote possession. (...) On the other hand, the verb "attain" is generally used in the context of achieving a state or condition.
Examples are at the link. And it's been changed on the main Local page already. [adminhide]I'd expect anyone writing professionally to know this already.[/adminhide]

Symonds aint black. He just looks like a monkey. Bunch of pussies, the Ozzie cricket team. They "give" but cant "take" and they run to the referees like cry babies.

I like Obama.. One of the things I respect him for, is that he didn't run as a "black man".. He didn't really play the race card, and doesn't seem to in general.. I'm not sure he would care all that much about a monkey being named after him.. He has more important things to worry about. Unlike, apparently, some PC types with their minds stuck in the 90's MTV PC era..
10:44 July 11, 2009 by SmittyBoy
It's not OK to intentionally offend anyone, but surely it's OK to unintentionally offend everyone. It's simply not possible to live your life without impinging upon someone else's sensitivities. You shouldn't have to worry about every word you say, and whether it can be misconstrued to be offensive.

So, to all you people who are so easily offended, grow some thicker skin. I am tired of having to couch every word I utter!

The only racists in this story are the group called: Initiative for Black Germans (ISD). Who, but them, is comparing black people to monkeys? o.0 This is a perfect example of finding racism where it doesn't exist.

Zoo keepers love all their animals therefore honouring Obama.

Let Obama himself decide whether they should keep the name or not.

I agree with tenorax.

And really we are all the same. Get a life and get on with living.

If some zoo keeper named one of their creatures after me,I would be honoured and I would like to visit the zoo to see how the particular animal (creature) is going.

Same I would say for Obama.

I'm sure Obama would be happy to visit the zoo and see the primate named after him.
04:56 July 12, 2009 by Steffen Kaufmann
Still Barack Obama would be the best name for this cute monkey in the Dresden zoo. This is exactly because of those well-known stereotypes.

The US president looks rather similar to this cutie and is very obviously more capable than a ice bear, nobody would complain about the name of this beast of prey. Sceptical people who know everything better should be ignored, Yes we can. I would have highly appreciated every refusal to rename the monkey.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends, these things are old. They have been the force of progress.

Those who still didn't get it. Black people have throughout the years been insulted and compared to monkeys in not-so-funny books, in not-so-popular jokes, and even in illustrated Theory Of Evolution books. If you guys still did not get it, here is another try; Had a bear or a cat been named after Obama, there would have been no offense because historically no one ever compared anyone to those to fury animals. Get it now? Or is it still hard to comprehend? However it probably would have been an honor for the hard-core Darwinists to see their names given to monkeys since they strongly believe they were their grand-parents. This said, I would not take an offense in my name was given to a monkey or a lizard, I could care less, but I do feel the insult from those air-heads naming a monkey after Obama. And BTW I think Obama is a fraud, groomed and put there by the invisible US government.

I think it is fair that they bought the issue to the zoo's attention and simply ask for the monkey to be renamed.

I don't think it was fair that they assumed it was subliminally racist. You can't just accuse people of being racist that to me is just as hurtful. Mentioning the words Nazi Germany in any context when discussing race is sending a subliminal message for the germans to bow down and feel ashamed, to back off if you will.

I think there are bigger issues in Germany for the black community. Only yesterday I went shopping for a black doll for my daughter and couldn't find one anywhere. It was really terrible. The shop assistants werent even bothered by it.

Lets not forget the outrage and disgust about the fried chicken as well.

[topic="127398">German frozen food firm sells Obama fried chicken[/topic]

Some people are very quick to be offendend on behalf of someone else and will use any and all excuses to cry racism.

Big problem of course is "the boy who cried wolf" kicks in and when real racism crops up it gets ignored or sidelined.

Keyes v. Obama.

At the hearing today at the Federal Court building in Santa Ana, Judge Carter said the following:

1. There will be a trial.

2. It will be heard on the merits.

3. Nothing will be dismissed on procedural issues.

4. The trial will be expeditious, and the judge pledged to give case priority.

5. Being a former Marine he realizes the importance of having a Constitutionally qualified POTUS/CINC.

6. Judge stated that if Obama isn't Constitutionally qualifed he needs to leave the White House.

I don't know how long you live in Europe or Germany, it may be unheard of in north america. It's an age old and well known racist jibe, calling black people monkeys. Not only in Germany.

In Spain they occasionally throw peanuts and bananas at black players in football stadiums, while doing monkey chants. Happened here as well. As in most European countries.

It's something you can easily agree on if you know about the racist types who live here.

It's liek calling an Ggorilla in the San Diego zoo, Uncle Tom. Hey it's just a name.

Btw in a post yesterday i complained about over the top PC sensitivity.

This is so obvious, it's hardly PC to notice.
09:44 July 17, 2009 by matt.ryles
I've not read all the post, but I get the idea, so Im gonna have my little say.

How stupid, a primate has to change his name because there is a new president. I mean who even brought the whole thing up, any monkey that has the same name as any black male/female should be shot on sight.

People take the racist thing too far, as if it was ever intended to be racist.

Clowns.

It should be the intention that count. It's bad enough that people actually use monkey comparisons for black people. But it's even worse if you want to see racism where none exists.

I am thinking of moving to Germany, one reason being to escape the "totally over the top" political correctness here in the UK, but reading this makes me wonder if it is just as bad in Germany.

Um, no, it is not unheard of in North America.

And considering the Germans' fondness for calling Brits "Inselaffen," presumably naming a primate Gordon Brown could be considered pretty offensive, too, even though Brown is not Black.

There once was a mandrill Obama.

He was born in the zoo, and his mama

liked this popular name.

All zoo visitors came

to regard him as Real Obama.

He IS real — B.C. and all shots

(not like some reprehensible putz...) —

but "the public" complained,

citing passions ingrained...

We are busy connecting the dots.

Caution !

Politically Correct Morons at Work...

I left the U.K. to move to Germany, Because I've been mugged, attacked and Racially Abused on many occasions in London. Strangely All by black / mixed black people (NEVER by Indian/Asian or Orientals). Britain now has So many Non-Whites that in many urban areas it is You who are the minority.

I moved to Germany to escape that. I feel welcome here AND Safe. Far more so than I did in Britain for the last few years I lived there.

My personal oppinion is that I think there are a lot of Naďve Liberal Germans sleepwalking into the same failed multicultural nightmare that now exists in Britain.

When I tell Germans I meet that 20%+ people living in the U.K. are non white they are tottaly shocked... interesting.
