Man loses €23,000 in cash during convertible test drive

A man test driving a new Audi convertible on Wednesday lost €23,000 – with which he’d planned to purchase the vehicle – because it blew away when he simply put it on the backseat.

The 23-year-old from Hannover was “apparently not an experienced convertible driver,” news agency DPA reported. He took the sporty new Audi A3 convertable onto the A2 motorway after putting the unsealed money envelope in the backseat for safekeeping, then watched in horror as the money fluttered away when he reached a high speed.

The man called police from the German state of Lower Saxony, who closed the A2 in both directions for 30 minutes between Garbsen and Hannover-Herrenhausen to help him search for the airborne cash.

He was only able to find €20,000 of the initial sum, most of which was located near the guard rail, police said.

It remains unclear whether he will still buy a new car.

I'm sorry, that's ridiculous, maybe he doesn't deserve the money or the car!

Oh my God! At this time of the year when the credit crunch is like a pair of scissor cutting through ever fiber in the economy, a 'lunatic' is driving with €20,000 tied in a piece of paper behind the car. I think he does not deserve the money. I hope a lucky person who is in need of such money finds it and keep.

Really, I'd prefer to hope that some honest person finds it and hands it in. Maybe stealing other peoples property is normal where you come from.

Perhaps he will give a reward to the person who finds it?

Is it normal in germany to literally pay with cash and not a bank transfer or something???

how come this doesn´t happen when I am around?

It's definitely normal for my German husband!

He ALWAYS carries cash with him. Large amounts at that.

He has purchased all of his electronics, furniture, and cars with cash.

He only uses his bank card if absolutely necessary.

So, perhaps it IS normal to pay with cash for everything in Germany.

(Isn't there a topic on this somewhere..?)

I sold my old car on a Saturday and paid for my new one on the Monday - spent some of the time in between walking around with ?12000 in ?500 notes in my pocket.

It's definitely not unusual here to at least pay the deposit in cash or to be paid for a car sale in cash.

Cash here

I also make sure I am well guarded.

Yup. I had to buy my car with cash 'cos they didn't gimme enough time for any other process. Dealer even has a cash counting machine like at the bank.

What A Jackass!

I don't care if it IS normal to pay cash for the car (BTW I think they have Cashier's checks here = easy to fold up and put in your pocket) any moron has watched enough gangster movies to know you show up with black briefcase of perfectly stacked money.

(BTW #2 - if I HAD to pay with actual cash, I would TOTALLY do the transactions in 5's just to make those bastards have to count it all)

P.S. how's that convertable gonna be in the wintertime! brrrr

To all you who are marveling at anyone paying large sums of cash (or walking around with ?20K); consider the following:

Cash is essentially untraceable - there are many people who prefer to do their business in cash for the obvious reason that it makes it easy to not report income. Obviously they run the risk of getting caught, but for many, this risk is considered small compared to the benefit.

To many people - and I think you might be surprised how many - ?20K is just not that much money. Having worked in the Investment Banking field for many years - although as a programmer, not a suit - I have seen this kind of money blown on an expensive lunch. Think about what a professional footballer earns (Ribery is potentially earning that much for playing a single game of football if his transfer to Man. Utd. goes through). OK, so Ribery is exceptional, but there are plenty of extremely highly paid footballers out there. Consider other high paid entertainers, and there's lots of them, for whom 20K is an appearance fee. 1% of the population of Germany is earning enough so that 20K is nothing to be too concerned about. 1% of 50 million is a lot of people.

Bollox. Its an Audi and therefore only a soft ragtop. Noisy and colder than a proper car.
14:42 May 14, 2009 by lilplatinum
If you are only buying a 20,000 euro car then I would think 20k is likely a lot of money to you. If your making 50 mil you probably are getting something nicer

Obviously a knob for wanting a convertible in the 1st place.

he must not have been one of those people. that is why the clown had the A2 shut down, he literally pissed that money away in the wind and tried his best to recover it

Has the idiot never hear of a glove compartment...seriously...but then again I would have been gutted if my hard earned money flew away...he was probably so excited to test drive the car wasn?t thinking straight...men and their toys!!

Cobblers, modern cabrios have multi layer hoods and are no colder than a saloon or cabrio with a folding metal roof. They are a little noisier than a fixed head saloon but that's it. I've had both softop and folding hardtop cabrios and there's no difference.

Indeed.

As to paying cash, in Italy and Spain it's not uncommon to buy homes in cash - you pop to the bank and pick up the reddies (either from a mortgage or your account) and then pop down to the notary's with the cash. I've seen people pitch up with 300 large in notes before now. You can, of course, arrange a police escort if you're a poof. Real men just get their mates and a few shotguns and hope to re-enact the ambush scene from 'Ronin'.

Don't worry - JE's still smarting from the fact that I've just bought a nicer motor than his, albeit with a ragtop not a folding piece of metal that swallows all your boot space.

Why is the Autobahn shut down for this? I would be upset if I was trying to get somewhere, and this jerk gets the whole road shut down for being a jerk. If he wants his money back so bad, he should try and catch it in traffic.

Bet that stretch of motorway is teeming with people scouting for the lost 3 grand now.. im considering nipping down there mself tbf..

At least when I picked mine up it hadn't been pre-thrashed by some Essex boy racer who probably wiped his smeg, snot and spunk all over the seats. DNA tests on your car seats would probably produce 97 different results from one weekend in Southend-on-Sea.

Seems only fair. I'm surprised they even did it, given that it was hardly a danger to traffic (although the bloke wandering around of his own accord, trying to retrieve bank notes from the carriageway, might have been).

At least mine has the right number of seats - 2. The only man to look good in a four seat convertible was Adolf Hitler. Fact. And his was a Merc, not a Volvo.

Why did they block off the road? Here's what happens when you get cash strewn all over the freeway: people risking their lives for a few measly bucks.
