'Naked' scanners fooled by creased clothing

Published: 16 Nov 10 12:18 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/sci-tech/20101116-31209.html

Controversial "naked" body scanners currently being tested at Hamburg's airport are constantly malfunctioning due to folds in passengers' clothing, broadcaster NDR reported on Tuesday.

The public radio station said the trial of the body imaging security scanners has been plagued by serious problems. The units, which have been in use since September, are apparently unable to tell the difference between foreign objects and such things like pleated clothing.

The scanners use millimetre-wave technology to produce outline images of bodies, with each scan lasting less than three seconds.

While some passengers are being asked to remove thicker clothes such as jumpers, NDR reported that the devices are regularly malfunctioning due to creases in lighter clothes such as blouses and skirts.

Although use of the scanners remains optional, every passenger must now also be patted down and pass through a metal detector, whether or not they have been scanned.

The extra security checks are causing delays, resulting in longer lines and irritated passengers.

New software due to be installed to solve at least part of the problem is not yet ready for use, NDR reported.

The scanners has previously been criticised by civil liberties campaigners the world over, mostly due to fears of how the images would be stored.

Plans to fast-track tests of the controversial body scanners were announced in January following the foiled “underwear bomb” attack in Detroit on Christmas Day 2009. The trial period is due to run until the end of March 2011.

This is just the beginning. You really need to understand and tell others that the scanners do not detect anything inserted into a body cavity in the nether regions. The fact that they are now increasing their groping activities gives way to possible other forms of invasion, ie: probes? People, this is just the beginning, it will get worse unless we put up a fight and reign in the TSA and their leader Napolitano. This is being done not to make us safer but to try to break our will and control the population. We can make jokes all day long about this, but if you're the one getting molested, it's not so funny....
22:15 November 16, 2010 by JohnnesKönig
cindinator your right it isn't funny at all. the very people they say they protect are the ones being violated.. and what have these measures prevented? all the attempts have been foiled not by authorities, but by passengers!
22:22 November 16, 2010 by Beachrider
Inferring that the scanning clerks are violating people's privacy is argumentative. ANY information gathering violates someone's privacy at some level.

The clerks are doing it to detect intrusions by terrorists. EVERYONE knows that.

If you find it invasive, then don't fly commercial. People who want to fly commercial will put up with being scanned.

It isn't safe to fly unless everyone is checked.

As usual, the people who decry the use of scanners, searches, xrays, shoe removal, et.al. have only complaints and no alternative solutions.

"to try to break our will and control the population"

Sounds like religion and the US republican party!

i would prefer to have other form of scanning. I am aware of laser and xrays. I would tried my best to avoid these dangerous mediums.

As long as he's cute...I don't mind being patted down ;)

I always get those brusque matron patter-downers. :(

I do not approve of these increasingly invasive methods of clearing passengers for commercial flights. I understand that the public is concerned about safety, but there is a need which must be addressed. The need is: Profiling those individuals or groups whose like types have been shown repeatedly to cause problems ranging from disruptions to deaths of innocent people.

I find many Muslim people I have known to be interesting, charming and mostly friendly. But their religion has been used to further an agenda that most of the world is not in sympathy with. This religion insists that its tenets be observed on all levels by the rest of the world. It demands special treatment while decrying our Western Society's very existence. Yet, in 'fairness' we must all be subjected to these idiotic security procedures which are largely useless as the determined ones seem to get through them with little or no problem.

Until those worshipers of Islam take the responsibility of curtailing the bad behavior of their 'leaders', the entire group should be scrutinized until it is clear that Islam is no longer a threat to the world. If necessary, let them return to their countries of origin and practice it there.

"All Muslims Are Not Terrorists, But All The 911 Terrorists Were Muslim"

And in bad financial condition, it has been revealed. So if the chief motivator of their hatred is money and jealousy toward the West, what does that say about them and their 'religion'.

If you rely on Government to save you, say your goodbyes now.

Everything at the airport is security theatre, anyway. None of it is effective, everyone knows it. How is a naked-scanner going to stop a terrorist from detonating a suitcase full of explosives during a busy boarding time in the main terminal? There's hundreds of casualties right there. It's all just a safety blanket. Let's just accept it and stop spending so much money on it.
13:23 November 18, 2010 by Beachrider
These scanning approaches are based on how things 'got through' in the past. Since those types of intrusion have abated, they are working.

People who say that there are other ways to hurt people AT AIRPORTS are talking about another kind of security. The scanners are about people ON PLANES.

It is invalid to declare something 'theatre' just because you switched the problem.

Fortunately, we don't need everyone's approval to do advanced passenger clearing. You need to scan the passengers (and baggage and employees) to make the flights safe. Stop arguing about that.

It is quite hard to separate PROFILING from PREJUDICE.
18:36 November 18, 2010 by Spitfeuer
Prejudice - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster ...

injury or damage resulting from some judgment or action of another in disregard of one's rights; especially : detriment to one's legal rights or claims ...

WHERE IS THE INJURY OR DAMAGE?

I SEE NO PREJUDICE IN HAVING IDENTIFIED A GROUP THAT IS PRONE TO THE

VIOLENCE THE MUSLIM EXTREMISTS HAVE PERPETRATED ON THE WORLD OR THEIR FOLLOWER-SHEEP WHICH PERMIT IT.

AT SOME POINT A LITTLE DISCRIMINATION IS DUE AND JUST.

YOUR RIGHTS DO NOT EXTEND TO THREATENING LIFE, LIMB AND FREEDOM OF OTHERS.

GET A DICTIONARY.
18:45 November 18, 2010 by Beachrider
So Spitfeuer you are OK with a 'little discrimination'? Just how much before it becomes too much?

On Dictionary.com, you would have to get to definition #4 before you come upon your definition. 1-3 fit much better:

1.an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.

2. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.

3. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.

I recently flew with Ryan Air and anyone who visualises security officials groping lithe young nymphs needs to see the state of fellow bratwurst eating obese travellers to get real. Not a job I'd want for double their money.
15:19 November 19, 2010 by Voyd
It's basically getting to the point where we should drop trou and walk through the metal detectors and scanners butt-naked - at least then you will never have some balding old tw*t groping your testicles in search of non-existent bombs

@Voyd
13:28 December 7, 2010 by ron1amr
Thats a great idea Voyd. Walk through the scanners void of any clothing, place all your clothes on a tray. Walk through naked then retrieve your clothing at other end of scanner. This will work. Its a bit like undressing to take a shower. But yes it always has been the case a minority of people spoil things for the rest.
