Neo-Nazis targeting children online

Published: 25 Aug 10 16:47 CET

German right-wing extremists are increasingly targeting children online, luring minors to websites by disguising their hate-filled ideology.

German youth protection authorities Jugendschutz presented a report this week detailing the burgeoning neo-Nazi web offerings, including the use of social networks and video platforms.

The online offensive is part of the strategy right-wing extremists are using to disguise their propaganda and lure younger recruits, according to Jugendschutz authorities.

“This example showcases how right-wing extremists are abusing Web 2.0,” said Stefan Glaser from jugendschutz.net. “Their activities are increasingly found there because they can reach more young people.”

Extremists are also disseminating materials meant to look harmless, such as a CD of children’s songs and lullabies for tots between the ages of three to eight purportedly sponsored by Chancellor Angela Merkel. However, the songs actually contain anti-Semitic lyrics and encourage racist violence and Holocaust denial, daily Die Welt reported on Wednesday.

According to research done in partnership with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung), Glaser said that since 2007, the amount of neo-Nazi activity found on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter has exploded.

Recently state intelligence experts have warned that the neo-Nazi NPD party had increased their focus on online German social networks such as SchülerVZ, StudiVZ and beyond.

Experts say the danger is that many young people are unable to recognise propaganda and attempts at indoctrination from these groups at first glance. Instead of blatant symbols such as swastikas, many are using graffiti and other less-recognisable imagery from youth culture.

The abuse is rampant, and Jugendschutz.net counts an additional 10,000 active users of neo-Nazi blogs and download portals per day, Glaser said. The number of these radical internet sites has reached an all-time high, from 1,635 in 2007 to 1,870 now.

“The internet is the propaganda medium of choice for right-wing extremists to spread hateful content in order to net young people to talk with,” he told the paper.

Because more children are beginning to use the internet than ever before, Glaser encouraged internet service providers to invest more in security and social responsibility.

Oh noes! There are nazis everywhere!

That's horrible. Children have a right to grow up free from any kind of extremist indoctrination. It's pretty low of those neo-Nazi thugs to prey on impressionable young minds like that.

One thought though - don't you wish we had as much consensus about the harm caused by extremist religious propaganda...

so its ok to have police killer pages and sick child molester sites.... but not freedom of speech?

It seems like there is a rising in the neo-nazi activity in germany (just look at the rising amount of news here regarding it). very disturbing.

"anti-Semitic" How old-school. I figure they'd actually have a chance of being relevant if they tapped into the anti-Turk animosity.

Here in America they claim the number of neo-Nazi and KKK-type groups have exploded since the election of Obama, but that seems somewhat contradictory to me. I mean, if there's really so many Nazis around, how'd we end up with a black president in the first place? Were they not paying attention? Did it just dawn on them? I imagine a bunch of people going to the polls and voting for Obama, and then getting pissed off when they go home and find out on the news that he's black. Like, "Damnit, I thought O'Bama was Irish! What have we done!?"

No matter how much this neo-nazi thing seems to be growing, it will never be as strong as it was when Hitler was around.

I've met too many germans who confide that adolph "made too many mistakes" and that's why they lost the war. Morality never enters their calculus.
17:31 August 26, 2010 by michael4096
@catjones - and they're probably right. Morality never decided any other human conflict why should it be an issue in hitler's?

God Almighty, what a piece of reversal-accusatory propaganda. Not a single name, example of message, verifiable information, or intellectually honest inquiry about why the supposed "explosion" is happening. Nothing in the society suggesting a reason? Which age are the innocents? It is better to leave the "indoctrination" to what rightly belongs, right? Only playing with pre-build connotations of boogey-man things, suggesting, and slandering. Is this information? What a sad world.

Children !!( Ohhhh) -----> We must do something!

---> internet control ;) ------->now we are in control of what the sheeple must think :):) --------> Germany is a humane democratic country with freedom of expression.

Erase my message and you are building karma for a painful outcme of your cowardice soon, not from me, but from the rotten society that is building around you.

"Glaser said that since 2007, the amount of neo-Nazi activity found on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter has exploded."

Yes, and so has theese sites overall. Web 2.0 has exploded the last few years, and with that comes "nazi" presence, but is that so weird? It would be more weird if "nazis" wouldn't follow the online trends - that would be news!

It's like I always have to warn my wife when she goes out: "Honey, don't forget to buy some more paper towels, and -- look out for all the e-vile NAZIS!" (We live in a rarther upscale but very ba-a-a-ad neighborhood, inhabited almost exclusively by (white, naturally) racisssssts.)

The second you throw out a bible reference in support of your "argument," you have lost the argument. I find myself in the destructive world which you and your ignorant ilk DID create. So get lost, along with your biblical bullsh*t.

@ Gretl

Anti-semitism is not specific to Jews, it includes all arabs (this would include Turks).

@ SFmemberSITR

I read the entire Bible when I was a kid. It is such a poorly written piece of literature and history, with almost no meaningful content aside from giving us some window into the minds of people living in the first centuries AD, that at the age of 10 I was turned away from Christianity upon finishing said book, being blatantly aware of all its awful implications (everyting from god calling for Genocides to the endorsement of the women-as-property view). And aside from the particular awfulness of the Bible (which you've never read aside from maybe the gospels) you don't have a leg to stand on if you need to resort to religious texts to build an argument.

Wow, this is rich coming from the media!

The media, the biggest propaganda machine in history, is calling the internet where millions of people can speak freely, a "propaganda tool"?

Wow, if people believe this article, then they are too programmed to think for themselves!

The media accusing the internet of propaganda, is not only obviously propaganda against an entity it has no control over, it is also blatant hypocrisy!

The media is just unhappy that the internet is causing glitches in their programming of society!
17:51 August 27, 2010 by Vodogren
This is horrible. I can't believe there are still Nazi's.

There are still too many White people existing.

The immigration needs to be made faster and more immigration. Don't let the Nazi's win.

Encourage more assimilation (White must marry other races).

We must do this assimilation more faster. So, there be no more White people anymore and no Nazi.
18:15 August 27, 2010 by trotis
@Vodogran:

Wow, that is so racist of you! Can you not see your own hypocrisy?

You are openly calling for the genocide of the white race!

You criticize the Nazi's, but look at you!

I'd rather have my children listen to some Nazi, than to a media indoctrinated genocidal maniac like you any day!
19:18 August 27, 2010 by Icarusty
This is not Freedom of Speech, but the Freedom to Hate in addition to indoctrination... things that caused World War 2 in the first place. I ask anyone who favours this/is impartial to it - if you were a minority in a country, would you like to be persecuted, slandered and stereotyped, with the constant threat of extremists when you are trying to live your life?
21:01 August 27, 2010 by OmoCleans
@ Icarusty

What about the whit minorities in Africa? Many have face extreme persection in places like Rhodesia and South Africa!

6% of South African farmers including the elderly and children have already been murdered!

It sounds like people like you approve of this slaughtering of innocent people, or let me guess, the " free-speech" media hasn't told you about it!
22:34 August 27, 2010 by Rhett
First thing you know, they'll have a television advertisement depicting a pretty white girl with a Nazi boyfriend!

"Extremists are also disseminating materials meant to look harmless, such as a CD of children?'s songs and lullabies for tots between the ages of three to eight purportedly sponsored by Chancellor Angela Merkel."

Well, that's just terrible. However, I think I rather have a DVD of the German National Anthem than to have my 13 year old watch Ben Stiller movies that contain fecal matter, urine matter, and homosexuals.

@ Talonx

The meaning of the term "anti-Semitism" has evolved to the point that it's applied to the hate against Jews, in spite of its etymological meaning. And the Turks are muslims, but no Arabs.

@ OmoCleans

You're perfectly right. It's politically correct to denounce xenophobic attitudes against non-whites, but when it comes to denounce xenophobic attitudes against whites, many people will look at you like asking: "Are you kidding me?" And then you'll be labeled as a racist.

The Jews are an ethnic group subjected to such a treatment. Denounce them, and you'll be appaluded; but denounce xenophobic attitudes against them and you'll be criticized.
02:35 August 31, 2010 by dojunmarn
Fortunately, the Jews have not closed off all freedom of speech here in the US. God bless Adolph Hitler, and the last real men of Europe who dared to resist Jewish domination. Now the entire White race has a vicious monkey on its back.
