Green official stole to fund prostitute affairs

The former treasurer of Brandenburg's Greens has admitted stealing well over €250,000 from the party and spending it on love affairs he had with two prostitutes.

On Monday he faced charges of transferring more than €200,000 from the Brandenburg Green Party account to his own. He is also accused of using additional party funds to cover €14,000 of his own bills - and of having taken around €54,000 in cash.
He broadly admitted all the allegations at the start of his trial at Potsdam district court, saying he had spent the money on the two women.
He said he met the first woman when she was working as a prostitute in Berlin. Initially he paid to see her, but later developed a personal relationship with her - and paid €20,000 for her to go to rehab to try to kick her heroin habit.
The court also heard that he started another relationship with a second prostitute who defrauded him of a total of €200,000. She spun him a story about needing money to pay for her sister's hospital treatment, and how she was being blackmailed by a creditor.
She then disappeared, leaving Goetjes alone, broke, and having raided the bank account of his party.
A civil trial of the case this spring was settled when the Green Party's leadership accepted his offer to repay at least €65,000.
