Merkel unavailable: Romney avoids Berlin

Germans hoping to see US presidential candidate Mitt Romney on his European trip will be disappointed, as the Republican has cancelled a Berlin visit amid fears of failing to draw the crowds that President Obama did four years ago.

Starting on Thursday, Romney's visit to Europe was going to include Berlin for a one-on-one meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. But that was before he found out that she would be on holiday and unavailable to meet up, the Tagesspiegel newspaper said on Sunday.

Merkel is not going to be far away though - she is due in Bayreuth, Bavaria, on Wednesday for the opening of the Wagner opera festival. This traditionally marks the start of her summer holiday.

The paper said Romney's foreign policy advisers had recommended against him following in President Barack Obama's footsteps and undertaking a large European tour with public appearances.

They are allegedly keen to avoid his trip being unfavourably compared to Obama's wildly successful 2008 European tour, during which he gave a rousing speech in front of Berlin's Victory Column to more than 200,000 people.

Instead, Romney will visit the United Kingdom, Israel and Poland and skip EU heavy-weights Germany and France altogether – despite the fact he lived in Paris while on a Mormon mission for over two years.

Romney's campaign team told the Tagesspiegel that he would instead meet Merkel at some point before the U.S. elections on November 6.

German businesses typically favour Republican American politics, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Monday. In the run-up to the 2012 election pharmaceutical conglomerate Bayer is leading the way after donating $261,000 to the election campaign.

Telecom came in second after writing a cheque for $193,500. Deutsche Bank donated $86,250 to Romney's party and insurance giant Allianz gave $12,300.

It is widely accepted that big businesses offer generous donations on the run up to elections in the hope newly elected governments will keep them in mind while setting policies, the paper said.

And while the Republican party is traditionally the main recipient of German politican donations, the 2008 elections saw Obama's Democrat election campaign receiving more than his opposition.

My initial reaction was who the hell would want to see Romney in person, then I thought for a moment and I reckon I might want to get in line and see a real live fireproof underwear wearing man....

Frankly, who wants to listen to a bunch of lies from this stuffed shirt...stuffed with dollar bills I might add. OBAMA IN 2012.

Sorry to hear Merkel won't meet with Romney. He's not politically correct like being a black Maxist.
15:10 July 23, 2012 by SchwabHallRocks
A politician's job is to get elected / re-elected. She met with Obama cause she felt is was politically useful.

I am sure the first Turkish or Jewish person who has a chance for German Chancellor, or Algerian for France, will get a nice reception in the USA.

Though it will not be in this century due to the inherent bias in these two countries.

But, as the original Germans become extinct from low birth rates, sheer demographics will enable it.

Living in the past politics of the 20th Century, why go to Europe to show diplomacy, China or the Middle-East would be more relevant. A visit to the troops in Afganistan, might even win a few votes in the US.
20:40 July 23, 2012 by Ricardoh
Too bad you will be missing seeing the next US President. Your lose. B. Obama who you cheered so wildly is a disaster for the United States. He has done absolutely nothing on any of the things he campaigned for and in fact has made things worse. Glad you like him in Germany maybe you will have a spot for him in the government next year. He will be happy to give all of your money away.

He got rid of don't ask don't tell, set up better health care for people who the corporations tried to throw away, saved the jobs of thousands of workers at GM and all the related manufacturing industry tied to it,was obstructed in almost everyway by republicans who don't know how to get along with anybody anymore (and they used to) when it came to wall street reform, badly needed infrasrtucture projects and environmental protection. He's done a lot for someone who didn't have the help of all the republican babies who want their own way over everything or will grind anything to help anybody to a halt. So to say he's done nothing is just Fox "news" propaganda from a republican sheep. Baa-aa--aaad Obama.. Romney won't even commit to signing the Lily Leadbetter act to give equal pay to women doing the same job as men (which Obama did BTW) Go back to your fact free bubble sheep. OBAMA 2012

Lol, you're funny, Jblooze. You read too much yahoo news.
01:23 July 24, 2012 by wood artist
@Ricardoh Sorry, but I gotta go with JBlooze on this one. Rmoney is all about himself, the rich, and nobody else. Don't know if you follow things closely on this side of the pond, but he's a disaster...proposing plans that are focused on the rich...and enriching them, while completely devoid of any details that make them work. He promises to cut taxes for the rich, and cut the deficit, but won't explain how that can possibly happen. This isn't fuzzy math, this is math that doesn't add up.

His foreign policy ability and knowledge can be summed up on one word: Zero! He does, however, seem to know a bit about where to stash money off-shore to avoid taxes. He will lie straight to your face and smile nicely while doing it. In fact, that's probably his best known skill. Obama might not be perfect, but at least he's tried to do some things, and generally been thwarted by those who simply want him to fail, even at the expense of the American People.

The tumultuous reception by hundreds of thousand Germans at Berlin's Victory Column grounds to Barack Obama in 2008 was something of a spontaneous inspiration of a silent pathos in the hope of true understanding of their bitter sufferings in recent history. The fact that a colored person was sponsored by the U.S public for Presidency looked like an awakening of American soul to seek historical truth in the darkness of economic depression and unmerited suffering in spite best industrial entrepreneurship.

The great German response to the colored man reflects true concern for human life and earthly suffering in contrast to painted white super racist hauteur accused of them during Nazi era in world communicative media and continue to be stamped on the white skins of their grandchildren at present. If Romney's visit is deferred or not recommended by his supporters to old world Europe makes no difference to the Europeans.

"Germans hoping to see US presidential candidate Mitt Romney on his European trip will be disappointed" You must be kidding! I am German and I don't know a single German nor have ai heard of one that would like to see Romney in Germany.

As a matter of fact I can assure you that even though we are not impressed with Obama's presidency (for the first 2 years almost completely ignoring the people that put him into office), we certainly hope Obama gets reelected - simply because we do not need another hardliner screwing up world affairs, which is what can be expected of this Mor(m)on.

Obama obstructed by Republicans?

How do you account for his first two years of his term when his party had a veto proof Senate and a clear majority in the House?

This man is unfit for leadership, he has never managed anything in his life and his record of failure is proof! When you lead, you bring sides together, this guy has spent his term in office driving groups farther apart.
