Westerwelle defends Swiss after minaret ban

Published: 5 Dec 09 14:03 CET

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Saturday that it was wrong to consider Switzerland a nation of bigots after its vote in favour of a ban on building new mosque minarets.

"As much as I - just like the Swiss government - regret the outcome, it's wrong to come to the conclusion that Switzerland is an intolerant or undemocratic country because of this vote," he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Switzerland was one of the world's oldest democracies and was founded on tolerance, Westerwelle said, however, he admitted he would have campaigned for a different result.

In a referendum in Switzerland last weekend, 57 percent of voters approved a right-wing motion to ban future construction of minarets, a decision that was met with an international backlash and charges of religious prejudice against Muslims.

Here is a thought why don,t the christians share there church with the muslims

Have you noticed it's always "un-democratic" when the vote doesn't go the way "they" want.

Islam is a totalitarian supremacist political ideology that does not separate church from state. It exists to establish world dominion. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not recognised by Islamic states, who adhere to Sharia Law. There are no equal rights for all before the law, no freedom of speech and no freedom of conscience or religion. Non-Muslims, Jews, Christians, Gays, women, apostates are routinely harassed, persecuted, tortured and executed in these states.

And the political and media elite..the Left....accuse the Swiss people's vote of being undemocratic! What a bunch of traitors! They are siding with the enemies of democratic civilisation and conspiring against free speech.

Ooh, ah! How well elucidated and elegantly stated, rabid dog. I'm absolutely floored by your erudtion and eloquence and am totally convinced now.

lol.. whatever the result, the riches from saudi arabia or the gulf do NOT CARE at all, i guess. as long as their money in swiss banks kept saved, they are happy. As long as they can keep buying the share of the football club at premier league, they are happy... LOL...

Guido should just keep quiet. In switzerland Germans are not well liked and there is much racism (possibly generated by Jews on the quiet) against Germans working there, though they are willing to accept money from rich Germans such as Michael Schumacher who lives there. A bit like a prostitiute who is only interested in the color of your mnoey but not you.and German farmers near the German-swiss border are often threated by the Swiss. The Germans have never bothered switzerland, so why musy they thate the poor Germans.et things take theri own turn and let the Swiss be labeled racists. I agre with Islam not being very tolerent as described well by robidog. I come from Malaysia, and mind you gays, apostates form islam, other religons including christianity, hinduism are decriminated. In Malaysis it is considered a sin for a non-molsem to greet a molsem witht he words"Asalam Walai Kum" or "Walaikum Salaam". A few years ago a muslim women renounced islam for the christinaity and wanted to marry a fellow Malaysian who was christian, she was threatened anc cannot have her religon changed.

whats your point Mr. richard_vijay?

I guess you are not making any point here because you are mixing up issues!
13:25 December 6, 2009 by nipa
Mr. richard_vijay.

But at least in Malaysia Crucifixes are allowed to be worn in school and the same applies to Islamic scarves which are banned in Germany. There are at least 100 Christian mission schools in Malaysia where in Germany and switzerland the Islamic community there can only be dreaming of it. Churches like other places of worship of all faiths are allowed without restriction. In some areas where Hindus are minority the number of Hindu temples exceeded the number of mosques. Here reclining Budhas and are amongst the longest in Asia. Standing at 42.7 meter outside Kuala Lumpur, the statue of Murugan, is the world tallest hindu deity.

Clearly Malaysia practices more religious freedom than Germany and Switzerland but the only problem with this country is that it is not ?"a pot calling the kettle black?".

"Switzerland was one of the world's oldest democracies and was founded on tolerance, Westerwelle said..."

Why the past tense here?
14:22 December 6, 2009 by puisoh
robidog .. could it be that everyone is saying what is politically correct but is full of admiration of the guts of the Swiss people, I am.

moreanon .. Westerwelle's English is not the best but at least he speaks his mind, respectable and considering he is gay, this is rather bold of him since Muslims hang their gay people in city centres as public warning.

Indeed, political correctness has a stranglehold on people's consciousness.....irrational and psychotic. It must be broken and people must speak their mind and voice the truth about Islam and Mohammed. The Koran is full of hate and violent teachings. Fact. To punish people for stating the obvious is the end of democracy and freedom. This ideological battle concerns all of us and must be fought with courage. The most important thing right now is to be informed...read the Koran, the Hadith and Mohammed's biography. Knowledge is power and is not hoodwinked by the lies and stupidity of the cultural relativists.

what bothers me more than anything else is the tolerance we as christians are supposed to show towards Islam when Islam does not respond in kind,
19:45 December 6, 2009 by Dizz
We seem to be in geosynchronous orbit, you and I, robidog.

This time I would agree with parts of what you say. Whether inadvertently or not I cannot tell but you've just expressed the first tenet of Islam which is the exhortation to knowledge and awareness. Indeed, people should read the Koran and Hadith and so forth, if for no other reason than to be able to critique from a standpoint of knowing what they are talking about. I have, and I assume so have you? However my understanding differs rather markedly from yours. Yet at the same time your interpretation does illustrate rather poignantly well the crisis in Islam today which is how it is being practiced and projected through literal, dogmatic and dare I say, pre-determined and motivated mis-interpretation.

Search google images with this text "Church Masque" , There is not a single Christian majority country in world where both Masque and Churches are side by side, You will find hundreds of photos from Muslim majority countries where Churches and Masques are side by side. So that means when Christian are majority they don't allow masque near their Churches. but tolerant Muslims do.

White Christianity is totalitarian ideology, They don't tolerate any body who does not look like them , talk like them or walk like them. Red Indians were first victims of this intolerant cult, than blacks, than people in their Colonies, than Jews (WW2), Now Muslims are new target of this cult.

Wow - now I've seen it all!

Trying to make a logical argument based soley on a Google images search!

You have me convinced...

Try building a church in Saudi Arabia and see how far you get.
15:46 December 7, 2009 by shivitti
I've noticed that robidog's comments have been removed. All they consisted of was the truth about Islam as being a totalitarian ideology that seeks world dominion. However, a comment above accusing Christianity of also being totalitarian is allowed to remain. The double standards on here are disgusting. This site is run by cowardly appeasers and hypocrites. Shame on you!
21:45 December 7, 2009 by puisoh
building a church in Saudi?? Don't forget how 4 Christian missionaries were brutally murdered in Yemen not so long ago... you can't even talk about other Gods in those religion-of-peace countries.
