The proposed publication of Hitler's Mein Kampf in Germany has sparked outrage and worries it would give voice to neo-Nazis. But The Local’s Moises Mendoza argues it is time for the country to fight extremism by supporting free speech.

Your comments about this article:
Political correctness in this country has developed into a mad hysteria in which the political parties supported by a brainwashed Media - tell the public what they may or may not believe.
I lived in England during WW2 and when were playing at being soldiers, we often chalked Nazi symbols such as Swastikas or the double SS on to walls. Of course it was sometimes a mess, about which the adults grumbled, but nobody would have regarded it as a crime. As far as I know, none of us ever grew up to be right-wing radicals.
I read a British translation of Hitler's Mein Kampf while still at school and cannot believe that anybody with an open mind would turn to Nazi-ism because of this rather poorly written work. Just the opposite, in my opinion, it is the continuous repetition of anti-German propaganda that has lead to the Legend of an enormously powerful (evil God), Hitler who was able to destroy half of Europe. Those of us who lived at the time know that he was just one of many European leaders who were quite ready to risk the lives of others in order to increase their own selfish position of power.
No not ¦quot;Mein Kampf ¦quot; is the problem, but the attitude of certain persons who believe they have the right to say what the less privileged may or may not know or read. Stopping this publication will just lead to a growing interest in the same.
It is true that one learns best from past mistakes, but the trick is not to dwell on them. Move on to better the present in order for the future to be bearable.
In my opening paragraph I said that it is important to firstly take into consideration the psychology of the people. Before releasing such literature as Mein Kampf, ask whether the people are prepared for it. Are they really? Are any of us really? Take a tour through Germany, especially further east or any part of it where there are small villages. Find a comfortable place to sit that has a wide view of the area. Now, wait and see the responses of people as a person of colour, or Asian, or anyone who looks foreign walks through the crowd. The reaction? Well, depending on what area you are in, the response is first curiosity, followed by slight shock, then an uncomfortable avoidance, followed by a faster walking pace.
Plainly put, sir, the people are not ready. The history of the events, we know them well. And it is good to be educated about it. The Militärhistorisches Museum in Dresden does a fine job of educating. But, what is truly needed, is educating people about the present. Exposing all peoples to different cultures, different races, and exposing people to the concept of loving tolerance. Only once people are made strong in the now, can they be strong for what was past and what is to come. Exposing people to such harsh material as Mein Kampf and the history that it carries, could stir up emotions assumed dead in people who would not want to be hurt by it again. I write emotionally about this topic, because I have travelled much, I was born in South Africa in the ripe time of apartheid; I was there when Egypt changed. Your writing, sir, can only be equated to the indoctrinating writings of war time.
Encourage people to travel, exchange knowledge of culture, rather than spreading words of hate. Teach this to kids.
I have to confess that I did try to read 'Mein Kampf' many years ago and have to say that I found it very tedious going, the bottom line is that Hitler lost the war simply because he was a very stupid man, where does one begin, the Russian fiasco, or alienating and not keeping the finest brains on the planet on his side, at least for the duration of the war, if he had, then who knows, it could well have been Britain and the U.S. that were on the receiving end of atomic bombs.

Not forgetting the 'Daily Telegraph'.
First, curious students (aren't they always curious) wanted to know more, primarily because such knowledge was forbidden.
Second, some people attended Communist gathers...for the same reason. They were inventoried and, in some cases, their lives destroyed. Out of that sort of thing came the Hollywood Blacklist.
At one point I remember joining a conversation about allowing Communists to present their ideas in high school. Many parents and adults were aghast at the very idea. I, being a student, took a more practical approach. I simply asked a simple question:
"What are you afraid of? Don't you think students would make the proper choice when allowed to hear both sides of a question?"
Of course, they had no answer...because...because...well, the kids will be polluted by that information.
I have a lot more confidence in Germans. It's a legitimate part of German history, and maybe understanding how it happened then would prevent it from happening again. Sure, a few will find the ideas valid and want to "sign up" but that's true today too. Put everything on the table, and I'll bet most people can figure out what's the best idea.

I think that writing has a huge influence on people. The "low level of writing", that someone mentioned above, did not prevent in the past so many people to follow. Hence, one cannot ignore the danger. And as someone else mentioned above, the German society, like any other society, consists of many different classes and the impact on some of them may be very bad.
Thus, my opinion is that:
1. this book should be restricted (to academic studies?).
2. there is a great symbolism in dealing with this question and forbiding the book giving the message that this is tabu!
To be honest I'm amazed that there are U.S.-Americans and British who still wonder why swastikas and "Mein Kampf" are forbidden in Germany considering the fact that they were responsible for the so called "Entnazifizierung" which eventually let to those things being forbidden.
Hollywood, together with the press tycoons that coincidentally are all jewish happen to spread the "guilt" to german new generation. i would like to see somebody talking about WHAT WAS GERMANY LIKE BEFORE HITLER??? WHO WAS MAKING GERMANS POOR? Who had the food MONOPOLY between other fields as well?
Who bombed DRESDEN??? in an inhuman way???? Who bombed JAPAN in a horrific way??? Who is talking in their behalve???
NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO PROHIBIT ANYONE TO WEAR THE SVASTICA OR ANYTHING ELSE...the people that THINKS this is ok they have DIRTY MINDS.
it is not the svastika...it is what they think it represents....and ANTI_SEMITISM???
Well if there is ANTI anything is because there MUST be a good REASON created by themselves...anti USA...a good reason for it...nothing is created for no reason.
SO OWN UP YOUR ACTIONS AND LIVE WITH IT.
Germans used to be a very educated and free people with full of Thought and full of future and now all a non smiling people, no love or peace in them! Just work and do your thing to survive! Lot of them have self hate and other complexes in them.

The so called democratic staat of Germany is a farce of the Western Allies with a corrupted money making ELITE of blood succers.
Nothing is true just all moeny making lie!
Guess what most German know it but they know if we fight it they will kill us as planed during war world 2 ! Now they are doing it slowly!
Some of your sentiments could (and are, if you read many of the comments in various English newspapers) be echoed by people here in the UK.
Hitler is alive and well, in the 'New World Order', he's left in his wake a huge legacy of guilt, soul searching, paranoia and political correctness, with people not being allowed to act or speak the truth without being branded a 'NAZI', not only in Germany, but also right across the first world.
In no other nation on the face of this planet is a population taught of its own dark past in such a strongly honest and consistent manner; you don't have to go far to find a German who went to a concentration camp on a school outing.
At least one other person pointed out here that the laws in place came about with the occupying forces denazification programs and not as the author of this unresearched garbage of an article (I mean that as constructive criticism, i.e. toss it in the bin) states, "...attempting to censor hate speech suggests that the German people have learned nothing from their dark past. ".
Claims that mystification of an idea automatically makes it attractive or that such a process is ultimately responsible for a fictional surge in neo-nazis in Germany is bizarre and the worst pseudo-science a bad journalist can spout. On the point of some fictional surge which according to the author is brimming just beneath the surface of German society, what are we to make of basically every other country on the face of the planet including Israel who have larger numbers of neo-nazis per capita than could ever be counted in Germany? These facts are not exceptional.
The very clearly stated reason for hate speech laws is to save German folks the terrifying ordeal of having someone shout them down with nazi slogans and propaganda, for the foreseeable future, synonymous in the minds of most Germans with death, destruction, and hatred. To dare to write an opinion piece dealing with this piece of German culture and not be aware of this very obvious fact is disturbing. This is not a law barring free speech it is a protection.
There is no law which makes Mein Kampf unaccessible, in fact annotated copies can be found at just about every major Library in Germany, originals are sold online and in used book stores, the text is freely available to read online within Germany as well (how this escaped the mind of the author of this horribly researched opinion piece is beyond me). Why the author chooses to mix up a (C) issue with hate speech is also beyond me, the position of the Bavarian government is very clearly that for as long as they hold the (C) nobody will be allowed to profit off of Mein Kampf. When they (C) is up, watch the slimes pour in an publish for millions, I'm sure they'll have a field day in the U.S. and U.K. where an absence of knowledge about folks own dark histories is replaced with a fetishistic knowledge of the Nazis.
Finally, I am not a fan of German hate speech laws either, nor do I think they handle their neo-nazi problems perfectly (though certainly better than any other nation on the planet), however I would not twist the intentions and history of the existing laws and cultural practices to conform to my views as the author has seen fit to do, either by way of ignorance or malicious intent.
Much of the WWII generation has either died off or is dying. Soon enough, no one in Germany will even have lived during the war. Yet the boogeyman still haunts them from beyond the grave. At a certain point, this kind of hyper-sensitivity becomes ridiculous. Imagine if Italians were still apologizing for Nero, or Hungarians for Attila. Once the generation that perpetrated WWII is gone, the only purpose these laws will serve will be to redress the sins of thy father (or grandfather in this case). I mean, how many generations should it go on for? And if grandkids are to blame for the actions of their grandparents, why not great-grandkids, and great-great grandkids? Take it back far enough, and the Egyptians will have to pay slave reparations to Israel.
But the writings of Karl Marx is allowed. Also Trotsky, Lenin and Beria is allowed.
The communist flag is allowed.
Communists/red/green alliances are allowed.
How many did the communist kill? How many did the nazis kill?
Why not ban both, just one?
Who controls this?
Have a good look at the idiots that post on your website, without reading any other commentary they regurgitate verbatim tired trite lines in support of fictions. Disgusting.
As reviewed from the many above comments, any branded condemnation of hateful concepts and evil perpetrators does not qualify the virtue of condemners but only promotes mistrust questioning the veracity of their righteous judgement.
Unilateral legislation by State as well as Federal German Governments only prevent rather than promote true and genuine approach by the present younger generation and make feel condemned instead of exonerated and hence seek paths of resentful retaliation.
Thanks to The Local for the bold presentation stirring up true sentiments.
Wake up, Europe. Don't let anyone use any excuse to take from you even the smallest freedom. It's a slippery slope that will lead to that that's as bad as the murderous totalitarian regimes of communism and nazism.
Seems like most of The Locals readership are the Foxnews crowd sensationalists or privileged fair dodging immigrants from the developed world like Design ( see http://www.thelocal.de/article.php?ID=40511#comment2670062).
Of all the poss, you and I are the only ones to point out the fact that Mein Kampf is freely available as educational material and by no means illegal to read.
By the way, the debate was not about printing Mein Kampf as a book, but printing excerpts in a magazine accompanied by explainations from current history experts to put it all in the perspective of the time. They also reprented newspaper articles from both the left and the right.
This was a worthy project, but it has turned out to be more trouble than playing the Ouverture to Tannhauser in Isreal.
I've read Mein Kampf and apart from being rubbish, it has no relevance in the modern world. Its bizarre ramblings are the thoughts of one man who clearly had a gigantic chip on his shoulder.
On the other side of the coin; there are numerous religious and far left publicataions available that pose a bigger threat to world peace than anything Hitler and his warped logic could come up with.
The Zionist impersonators that were allowed German money, political authority, and political clout, religiously saturated the globe with grossly manipulated and vengeful political attacks against Germany, one of 1000 nations equally guilty of crimes that are a horrible and natural part of war on home turf. Horrible atrocities committed by horrible dictators? No. Bad governments feeding the 1% who become rich from war and are completely helpless to prevent death and destruction.
Many horror stories from countries invaded by Russian invasions, as well as countries like Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam and most of the ME just to mention a few will never get the same saturation as Germany as their are no institutions devoted to making a living on demeaning the governments of these previously war torn countries for profit. Also, for some countries the temptation to invade is just to inviting to risk the same global upheaval.
Lets put the quilt where it belongs. the Bush administration is just as guilty of war crimes as little dictator Adolf. .The invasion of Muslim countries to insure Western control of foreign oil is no longer a secret and AIPAC cannot use the Main Stream Media to manipulate the argument that the War on Terror justifies the use of Depleted Uranium munitions on Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and any where else AIPACs desire for oil and power carries them. If Germany could accept that they were a small part of a disastrous decade, maybe they can save the one we live in now.
