Three die in huge crash south of Ulm

Three people died and 16 were injured in a 12-car pileup on the B30 route near the southern German city of Ulm in the early hours of Tuesday. Fog could be to blame.

Those who died were a married couple in their eighties and a 20-year-old man from Biberach, who was travelling in a different vehicle at around 1:15 am.

“A fog bank is likely the cause of the accident,” said a police spokesman.

Wreckage from the deadly pileup was scattered over more than 100 metres of road, leading to the closure of the B30 near Ulm-Donaustetten in both directions.

Three people suffered serious injuries and are being treated in nearby clinics.

Damn, that sucks.

Fog is always a catch-22 situation. Do you carry on driving at normal speeds because you know the road and nobody in their right mind would crawl along the highway (not my opinion), or do you slow down according to visibility levels and risk getting obliterated by someone not slowing down...

No - fog did not cause the crash - more like poor driving?

"Those who died were a married couple in their eighties and a 20-year-old man " .... any further questions?

Couple of years ago I was one of the first on the scene of a fatal accident on the A8. Coupe in there 80's did a u turn into the fast lane. Killed a young couple instantly and died of their own injuries.

My own father in law (now 87) had to be forcibly convinced to stop driving even though he had no sight in one eye and was increasingly confused.

Law needs to be changed. No one has a right to drive a car just because they have a license.

@Fatz:

That almost sounds like my gramps. It was suggested to him to not drive any more when he was in the hospital and never could find his room due to dementia.

The way he was driving was that my grandma told him which stick he had to use for the blinkers ect and where to go.

That isn't safe (though he never did get into an accident) Till the day he died, he had a valid drivers license.

Good Points, I have known some elderly that know when it is time to give up the wheels but also known to many that did not. One in particular ran over and killed a pedestrian and this was after his doctor recommended he not drive.

There needs to be a yearly drivers and eye exam, for people over 75. Any serious health or medication issues needs to be addressed also, it should be mandatory that doctors report any issues to the drivers license authority immediately.

@lucks,,,There is NO catch-22 when it comes to fog, snow, rain, etc. visibility dictates the speed which is safe to drive, I know it is on the drivers test. If you are unsure, just go to the DMV and request the drivers handbook. Always, always slow down in low-vis. situations. Those who don't, are breaking the law, and causing serious safety violations. You can get a citation for driving 25 in a 35 zone if there is low-vis. situation. It's called "driving too fast for road conditions".
