Army officer 'found to be a neo-Nazi'

An officer in the German army on duty in Afghanistan has been found to be an alleged far-right extremist, it was revealed on Wednesday. He apparently attended neo-Nazi meetings whenever he was in Germany.

The man, identified only as Michael L. from the central state of Hesse, currently represents Germany in the international forces stationed in Afghanistan, Stern said on Wednesday.

Germans wishing to become soldiers must be in agreement with the country's basic constitution – something that does not align with radical far-right beliefs. The country’s Military Counter-Intelligence Service (MAD) is responsible for monitoring army member's beliefs.

MAD failed to pick up on Michael L.'s involvement with the far-right. In 2008, he reportedly applied to become a member of the National Democratic Party (NPD), a neo-Nazi political group.

The party rejected him but he continued attending meetings run by the far-right group Freie Widerstand Kassel. The state intelligence service had been monitoring its activity for years by this point.

Michael L. is, Der Spiegel said on Wednesday, defended himself against the claims and has written a letter to his colleagues stating that he never applied to the NPD for membership.

His wife has refrained from comment, as has the Defence Ministry.

Since the nineties, experts have warned about political extremists joining the army to learn combat skills.

How is it libellous MrNosey? Nobody was identified as the person.

German army on duty in Afghanistan has been found to be an alleged far-right extremist..

How can you be found to be alleged. Either you are alleged or you are no??
17:23 October 3, 2012 by Berlin fuer alles
In Germany proof is not needed. You can be alleged to life in a house with alleged possibility of watching TV and by virtue of that be liable for TV tax. The judiciary will do whatever the government tell them. Same as in the late 1930s and early 40s.

Play on words... means nothing. No more than saying if one applied for work in a bank, then he is an alleged banker....

Is this the best news available that make the front page of the local? At least there is no story about cows that jumped the fence and such....

He is fighting to protect everybody's Freedom from extremists who would enslave women, murder men and turn children into living bombs. I personally can give a man who does something like that a second chance.

I have just one thing to say to him "Thank you for your Service, I hope it has made you truely appreciate the Freedom we have in the West."
08:28 October 4, 2012 by the.local.reader
how are you sure that he "protected everybody's Freedom from extremists"? Just because he served in Afghanistan? Are you sure he would not act according to his belief in Afghanistan given the chance?
11:29 October 4, 2012 by Zobirdie
Ok... again... I am not a fan of the NPD...

But...

It is, at this juncture, a LEGAL political party. Even if he is a member, which this article says he isnt, how is being a part of a legal political party a crime?

Secondly... Is he a good soldier? Because if he is a good soldier, should his politics matter? He works. He serves his country... Follows his orders....

Would people be concerned if he was part of the far left...? though if he was, he probably wouldnthave chosen to serve in the first place.

As previously pointed out, this mentality is precisely what the Nazis did. Guilt by association. In a democracy, people should be able to belong to a legal party. That is what democracy is all about.

@Zobiedie

my guess is the issue here is how well he would have carried out his orders if these orders were to open fire on the locals. He might have carried these orders out with a little more zest than necessary.

................and we come to the biggest german export besides beer and bratwurst; Nazis
14:55 October 5, 2012 by libsarescum
But its OK that Germany and the West keep "importing" extremist radicals muslims that hate our culture and religion. The Nazis just want to preserve it.

The only problem I see here is government trying to dictate personal attitudes and beliefs; if the man is doing his job and not advocating violent overthrow of the government , leave him alone. The people are supposed to control the opinions and actions of government (by electing those they agree with), not the government control the people.

If it is within the legal authority of government to tell people what they must, or must not believe, or how they must, or must not live (provided they do no direct injury to others), there is still tyranny (only a different type).
12:21 October 6, 2012 by Altepeter
So what? The man has a strong sense of German identity. Would you rather have an internationalist, pacifist, "we tolerate everything" hippie? Leave the man alone.
22:32 October 6, 2012 by michael valerio
MAD, your nuts. So what if he is right wing. He is fighting for his country, a country whose government elevated traitors to national heroes after WW2.

So he wanted to join a legal party? So what??
