Germany in €10-billion tank deal with Saudis

Published: 17 Jun 12 14:25 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/national/20120617-43203.html

Saudi Arabia wants to buy 600-800 Leopard battle tanks from Germany, more than twice as many as originally planned, the Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag reported, quoting government sources.

Thus far, reports had said the Saudis wanted to purchase around 300 Leopard-2 tanks, Germany's main battle tank which is also produced under licence in Spain.

With up to 800 tanks, the deal would be worth €10 billion, making it one of the biggest-ever for the German defence industry, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported.

While there is opposition to the deal in the chancellery and the Foreign and Defence ministries, the Economy Ministry apparently supports the deal.

A deal for a first tranche of 300 tanks is ready for signing and the Saudis want the whole deal wrapped up by July 20, when the festival of Ramadan begins, the newspaper said.

sell them more. Anyway they will never be able to fire this into Europe. Let them have it and fire each other. We are in need of big money and jobs. This can't come good any other time. Anyway they get a lot from European oil purchases.

15 of the 19 terrorists who pulled off 9/11 were Saudis.

So Saudi Arabia is to the 9/11 terrorists, what Bayern München is to the German national team.

So we attacked Af cuz they were harboring the terrorists (Al-CIAda franchise, but Shhhhhhhhhhh) ;).

Then we attacked Saddam cuz he was mates with Al-CIAda (never mind that they were mortal enemies, but Shhhhhhhh).

And the Saudis? You know, Team 9/11? The reason why we have to give up all of our rights and freedoms?

Let`s sell those Salafist extremists in Saudi Arabia 800 Leopards in exchange for some `o those petrol dollars.

Shhhhhhhh. Germany needs money and the taxes now more than ever! Those 3 new subs we are giving to Israel are expensive! :D

@IchBinKoolaid

Yes IBK, just how are Egypt and Libya doing?

Relevance? You know that I don`t care about.. those two countries? Ehhhm?

Al-CIAda strawmen? Meds?

`Yawn`

King, did you slip into a narcoleptic fit while trying to put a thought together?

@ Leo with who's soldier's are going to attack them with?
06:55 June 18, 2012 by Leo Strauss
@Moates1231

Well M, could be Syria or Iran.

Could be no one.

The point is that the petrol dollars are being recycled back to the West.

Perhaps a reward for Germany agreeing to boycott Iranian oil, as the Americans have dictated? After all, Iran is one of the Saudis arch enemies in the region and Germans have had to pay for the boycott at the pumps.

Just sayin.

Saudis in a (Panzer-) Audi's... by the way, I'm pretty sure that it's called "Holy month of Ramadan" and not "festival of Ramadan"... some people might get offended because of this
14:46 June 18, 2012 by SchwabHallRocks
@Leo - Aren't we still waiting for your proof that the freedom fighters in Libya were actually Al Qaeda being given weapons by Germany, NATO, and the USA?

@Gaidi - Given that the "some people" who might get offended are likely to be the "off with their head" types, I agree with you that the merry editors of this blog better get some police protection ASAP.

@Schwabi

OK Baby Schwabi, open your mooooooouth, Uncle Leo`s gonna spoon- feeeeeeed yoooooooou. Goooood. :)

Dude, I am not your private search engine. If you wish to believe in the Good Guy NATO, Bad Guy Al-Qaeda narrative, then be my guest. Simply ignore the facts and the inherent contradictions of this paradigm. Uncle Strauss says, believe in the Noble Lie and go back to sleep. Don`t forget to turn off the TV before you go to bed.

As I said to you in our last exchange, perhaps it is time to take down your Jessica Lynch poster.

PS: Aren`t we still waiting for your proof that the western Europeans didn`t complain about being bombed back into the stone age by the Allies? Caen, Monte Casino?

Strange last comment because I believe most of Western Europe were part of the "Allies"
21:18 June 18, 2012 by Leo Strauss
@Englishted

Some context: original quote by Schwabi: `Did the French, Dutch, Begiums, etc. complain when the British and Americans killed many 1000s of their innocent peoples (via aerial bombing, artillery, etc.) during WWII to liberate them from the Germans? No.`

My reponse: `Lastly, your claim that people in western European countries didn`t complain about their civilian deaths due to Allied Bombing is as astounding as it is false. Then as now, no one is listening. Just read some of the posts supporting the murderous CIA drone attacks in Pakistan, a sovereign and allied (ALLIED ENGLISHTED, ALLIED) state. They just don`t get it. Anyway, I suggest that you pick up a few books on Caen or Monte Casino while you are researching Mr. Bin Laden.`

Which brings you up to speed with my comment # 10 here.

`Strange last comment because I believe most of Western Europe were part of the "Allies"`

You are correct, my good man, they were. What is your point?

That didn`t prevent the Allies or Allied Air Power, if that makes it less strange for you, from carpet bombing cities and civilians in Caen or places like Monte Casino into oblivion. To assert that those civilian survivors didn`t complain is obscene. They did, but that did not alter Allied carpet bombing tactics, did it?

i think we all know who the Saudi's real enemies here are.... Sorcerers!

A Saudi man has been beheaded on charges of sorcery and witchcraft, the state news agency SPA says.

The man, Muree bin Ali bin Issa al-Asiri, was found in possession of books and talismans, SPA said. He had also admitted adultery with two women, it said.

The execution took place in the southern Najran province, SPA reported.

Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned executions for witchcraft in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, there were reports of at least two people being executed for sorcery.
