Germany 'aided Israel's nuclear ambitions'

Published: 3 Jun 12 10:46 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/national/20120603-42917.html

The Israeli government has outfitted three submarines built by a German shipyard and largely paid for by German taxpayers with cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads, a news report published on Sunday revealed.

According to news magazine Der Spiegel, Germany is providing Israel assistance with the expansion of its nuclear weapons capabilities and that several key officials knew of the plan.

The three submarines were built by a shipyard in Kiel, on the Baltic coast, and three others are expected to be delivered soon, the report said.

After the submarines were delivered, Israel outfitted the ships with nuclear warheads, the magazine said.

Until now the German government has said it knew nothing about the nuclear outfitting of German subs.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday that Israel received its fourth Dolphin class submarine from Germany last month. A senior Israeli Navy officer, speaking upon the arrival of the craft, said the "submarine has a range for everything," adding that it needs to refuel and charge its batteries only once in a long while, the paper said.

The first three submarines were given to Israel by Germany in the late 1990s, with the German government footing most of the bill, the Israeli newspaper wrote. Citing "foreign reports" it said the subs are equipped with cruise missiles that have a range of 1,500 kilometers and can carry nuclear warheads.

The submarines enable Israel to deliver a "second strike" in the event of a nuclear attack, the reports said.

The Der Spiegel report said former high level Defence Ministry sources as well as Lothar Rühl, the former state secretary of defence and Hans Rühle, the former chief of staff, told the magazine that they always assumed that Israel would outfit the boats with a nuclear weapons capacity. Rühle said he spoke with the Israeli military in Tel Aviv on this topic.

Israel does not make any official comments about its nuclear weapons programme, but information from the German Foreign Ministry showed that the German government knew of the plans as early as 1961.

There are records showing that former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt last spoke with then Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan in 1977 about the programme.

The submarines were built by the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche-Werft in Kiel. Three have already been delivered and the remaining three will be sent to Israel by 2017. Israel is also considering ordering an additional three, the report said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was very generous when it came to negotiating the business terms for the deal. Berlin will paying €135 million, or one-third of the total costs and agreed to defer Israeli payment for the rest until 2015.

But Merkel coupled the delivery of the sixth submarine with conditions: Jerusalem should halt its expansionist settler policies and should allow the completion of a sewage treatment plant in Gaza, which is also being financed with German money.

The Israeli government has reportedly failed to comply with any of this.

crazy.... here it is where my money goes.... and then they will aks me to retire at 70, for a crappy pension which will not enable me to even pay a elderly house

My dear friends,

please do not disseminate such fairy tales. I advocate a return to the standard and sanctioned narrative at once. Such facts will only confuse people and ruin their Mittagsschlaf or EM day dreams. Perhaps another article along the lines of the Madman of Iran or Hitler`s Helpers is in order? If you happen to learn that Israel will receive three more of these boats from Germany and will outfit them in a similar fashion, then please dismiss this informations for what it is: malicious propaganda. Let us all do our best to maintain the Noble Lie in the interest of stability and harmony.

smart2012

Please don`t be so egocentric. Your tax dollars and these submarines are keeping us safe from the Sea of Japan to the Baltic. Sacrifice is required in these dangerous times. The Guardians are watching over us and they know best.

Defending from whom? From the ones from whom we are buying oil?

smart2012

Defending from whom? Why, from ourselves, or rather those of our flock who are waking from the dream. You see, my friend, a time may come when Germans are no longer willing to give away such gifts to Israel. Even slaves err into the sunlight and then what shall be done when they are unwilling to return to the cave? How stories shall have lost their power. Perhaps then these Israeli nuclear-armed submarines may have a certain role to play. But I have already said too much.

You think too much, smart2012. I, for one, am happy to serve this state however I can without question, or at least that is what I say. If in the end there is no elderly house for me, then that shall be my happy fate. I should be content to work for free at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche-Werft until the end of my days.

Please, my friend, do not wake up the people. No, no. You are doing them a disservice and will cause them only pain. They shall be made blind by the sun. Rather, you should advise them to go for a walk today in the Fukushima fallout, or perhaps have them eat some Aspartam sweets and then wash it down with flouridated water at coffee time. Our tap water isn`t flouridated here, but you can buy this at the cheaper supermarkets, like ALDI (just look for the F on the ingredients). This is what I do, or at least, what I say I do. Anything to put them into a stupor. Let us consider what is Good.

These Dolphin class subs ,have been tested by Israel to fire the popeye turbo cruse missile with nuclear war head capabilities.

These subs have increased Israel's military capacity ten fold. Any country like Iran that stikes Israel first can expect a massive counter attack, which is the main point.

Thank you for reaffirming the sanctioned narrative and for putting all of us back on the right track. I too feel that all countries in the region, especially Iran with its Mad Man, must be held in check by Israel`s overwhelming nuclear arsenal and now it`s new German nuke platforms (at least this is what I say to those who don`t and shouldn't be allowed to know better ;)). The fact that Iran has no nuclear weapons makes it all the more unpredictable and dangerous to Israel, as you would agree.

But what to do? You see raandy, I too wish to add my voice to this Noble Lie, but fear I may fail us all in this venture. I would like to spread the good word, but am not able to find the date or the war I am looking for. You can help, my friend.

When was the last time that Iran started a war?

One thing is very important to point out - we're not talking about new submarines that Germany gave Israel, these are the same submarines that are sold to Israel based on the 1960s agreements . These are not nuclear submarines, but it is long known, unofficially, that Israel transforms the submarines to be able to carry nuclear weapons. The article is Spiegel tries to show that there are evidences that Israel is doing it, but the assumption that is does is not knew. There's no need for panic as if more "money is now going to the Jews" (and in any case, it's worth knowing that Germany hasn't paid the Jews even 10% of what it took from them).

Regarding nuclear weapons - it's a complex issue, but Israel is a small country that is threatened by many bigger countries. It's nuclear weapons are the only deterrence it has against those strong countries that threaten its existence obsessively, and it's important for Israel to have submarines that can carry nuclear bombs since if it is attacked with nuclear one day, god forbids (though I'm sure many people would like to see this happening), Israel has a chance for a second strike, against those who definitely deserve it.

Martin van Creveld, a prominent Israeli military expert, has boasted that if Israel were ever in its last throes it would use its nuclear arsenal to destroy the capitals of western Europe. He specifically mentioned Rome. It is already very late.

Iran was the example Netanyahu used. In that region they are always the fall guy for potential danger but as you pointed out they are more into rhetoric than aggression.

I would assume that these WMD that Israel posses are more of a deterrent, at least that is how they portray them, some citizens around the world are a little dubious.

"The fact that Iran has no nuclear weapons makes it all the more unpredictable and dangerous to Israel, as you would agree. " no, I would not agree.

Israel said in past it will not be first to use non conventional weapons.

IDF has by now big superiority in technology and quality and expierience on all arabs countries in combination and alone, the sea force was relativly small.

In the Arab spring in which any arab country is divided internaly and fight for its freedom , no time now to gother around Israel for another war,but the arab armies do buy new arm systems and do prepare themselves for the future,if no one will be smart to start a peace proccess, the same does Israel
18:46 June 3, 2012 by maorsh
Mid03: For the chance that Israel would indeed "nuke the world out" when it is already destroyed, the Muslim world should refrain from trying to destroy it, and the Western world should make effort to prevent such a scenario. The Israelis know that if they are about to be destroyed, the West wouldn't help them, and would prefer to sacrifice Israel to please those who are obsessed with hate against the Jewish people. In 1973, Israel was on the verge of destruction, and Europe didn't even let planes with supply fuel on its territory. After all, for 2,000 years Europeans didn't care much about the future of the Jews, so why should the Jewish people expect anything from them now? Indeed decades after the Holocaust the West cared more than before, but now even this changes because of the discourse of "the Jews are using the holocaust" and "why should the Palestinians pay for the crimes of the Germans?" and such nonsense. So the Jews are indeed on their own, their lesson from history. And this time they are not giving up so easily.

You really have to hand it to Israel, the Americans give them billions and the latest weapons systems, then Germany either pays for or defers payment for a fleet of nuclear capable U-boats. An army, navy and airforce paid for by others. My God, what a clever way to run a country. My hat is off to them, they are the smart ones, the American and German taxpayers are the fools.

Hirlbrink - sorry to ruin your "Jews use shady practices, manipulating everyone to work for them" image (god forbids you're not antisemitic, you're probably "only anti-zionist"..), but the American assistant to Israel (3 billion a year out of 250 billion yearly budget of Israel) can be spent only on purchasing American military equipment, so in addition to helping Israel defending itself, it supplies thousands of jobs for Americans.

And the German assistance - well, not that I think they have to pay more, but they haven't even got to 20% of what was taken from the Jews.

Hurlbrink

Do not underestimate the governments of Germany and USA , they are not fool and specialy when the western countries support Israel since 1948.

States got interests and they act just because of their cold interests , in case of America and the western countries the issue is the oil fields in the middle east ,therefore the west support many countries like :Israel,Eygpt,Jordan ,Saudia,Baharain,Lybia,Tunis, Qatar, Israel is just a small country important as friendly base to the 6 fleet which travel in the M.E and secure the transport of the tankers from the Indian ocean to the Mediteranian sea and then to Europe and USA,Eygpt is very important because of the Suess Canal, all the western world economy move thanks to this oil ,Israel is a small country but democratic and very stable it has 3 ports 2 on the Mediteranian sea and one on the red sea very close to Saudia and Jordan,

So Hurlbrink your leaders care about the economy and the industry of your country ,they need that energy source otherwise they would never be bothered to be there, have you ask yourself why the west do nothing about what goes on in Syria and did all possibile for Lybia?
