Teen boob job wannabes 'will have to wait'

Published: 12 Apr 12 09:54 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/national/20120412-41897.html

German teenagers wanting a boob job, a nose job or liposuction will have to wait until they turn 18, even if their parents will sign off on the surgery, under new government plans.

Piercings and tattoos would still be allowed for minors though, according to a Health Ministry statement quoted by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) on Thursday.

Terms describing cosmetic – or plastic – surgery should also be legally defined to prevent confusion and protect patients from unqualified surgeons.

Health Minister Daniel Bahr hopes to include the ban in a revision of patent protection laws – and set up a million-euro fund to compensate patients whose cosmetic surgery has gone wrong.

“Even with a thorough explanation, there is no guarantee that a young person will be able to understand the reach of his or her decision,” the statement said.

Around 10 percent of people who went under the knife in 2004 were under the age of 20, according to the Association of German Plastic Surgeons (VDÄPC).

It remains unclear how many people are dissatisfied with their procedure once they get home and look in the mirror, but more than 14,000 complaints against plastic surgeons were filed in 2010. Of the 7,355 complainants who went to court, 2,157 were awarded compensation.

The compensation fund that the Health Ministry hopes to set up could, according to the FAZ, start off with €2 million, which would come both from private donations from doctors and from public health insurers.

There is some merit to an age bar.

Elected surgery that changes a persons looks for better or worse should be very carefully scrutinized and researched. The doctors qualifications and reviews need to be made available to the prospective patient by law. Insurance firms need to approve the process and the doctor before going under the knife or in the case of self payment the ministry of health could review and give the individual all the pertinent available information concerning complaints or litigation against the surgeon. Before allowing the dissatisfied individual whether botched due to malpractice or not as described to receive public compensation.

Compensation in the form of money will not reverse the alterations made to someones appearance, due diligence prior to the surgery should reduce the number of negative incidences.

Having minimal knowledge of how the medical system works,it would be nice to read some other good suggestions on ways to improve this problem for those people desiring elected surgery.

Boob-jobs are a bit like tatoos. They might look fine today, but what do you tell your grandchildren, when you're stepping over the former or the latter now stretch too much to be proportionally visible any more? At least, I suppose, you can do a Pam Anderson and have the bags removed.

@Sayer

What makes you think that age automatically brings regret when it comes to tattoos or surgery?

There are two obvious issues with breast augmentation. Many women at age 18 haven't finished "growing" and so they're thinking of some problem that may not exist later. As others have observed, it isn't a "I'll just change it again later" situation.

The second issue, which I admit is unfortunately fueled by US marketing firms, is that larger is better and men only like the big ones. WRONG! Breasts are nice, but that isn't was makes you "you." If that's the only reason a man is attracted to you, it's time to find another man.

Sooo. from a few posts here, America is the source of evil in the breast enlargement business.

Um, no.

I must say it is about time there was an article on penis enlargement. Every time I check out at the grocery store, I see magazines with articles about various stars breast enlargements. Why not a few articles so the average citizen would not feel so funny about getting a bigger hot dog to satisfy his partner's appetite? It sure seems like discrimination to me.

Why should anybody pay for the consequences of someone's choice to get cosmetic surgery other than the person themselves?
21:41 April 15, 2012 by FIUMAN
So, some how big titties are ALSO the fault of America?

The argument that you may regret having a tatt or breast surgery because of sagging skin is ridiculous. With the minimal training that everyone should do you can avoid stretching and atrophied skin well until your 80's

True happiness comes from within, no amount of plastic surgery is going to make you happy. The porn industry I guess would have started this whole breast enlargement industry, because skinny women with unnaturally large breasts would sell more copies of their films. I've heard to them being called "Fun Bags", although obviously not for her fun but for the men watching the films.

So young women must see breast enlargement as a way to get attention from men? And maybe they think having lots of male attention will make them happy. So at least by putting the age up to 18, these women might develop some real internal happiness and laugh off the idea of breast enlargement they had when they were younger. But then again the culture of our youth has such a disposition to following a dream of fame and fortune, is anyone really surprised about what young people want to do with their bodies?

Umm, YES.. didn't you see the HBO special on their invention with David Schwimmer as the Jewish doctor from California, who was eventually trading them to strippers for sex after he plied them with cocaine? Fascinating stuff!

"Even with a thorough explanation, there is no guarantee that they will be able to understand the full reach of their decision." Interesting that Germans can understand that in this context but not when we are talking about 14 year olds having sex with 38 year olds...
