Prince: Germany should reinstate monarchy

Published: 14 Mar 12 12:41 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/national/20120314-41325.html

Germany should reinstate its monarchy to speak to people’s emotions, make them proud of their country and even encourage them to have babies, according to Prince Philip Kiril of Prussia, great-great grandson of the last Kaiser.

Speaking in Thursday’s edition of Die Zeit newspaper, Philip stressed that a monarch would be financially independent – and so would not be likely to accept presents from friends, such as those which led to Christian Wulff’s resignation from the presidency.

"A king is invulnerable to such cases," Prince Philip said. "Either he would have old family property or an Apanage – and it would be beneath his dignity to accept presents from friends."

"And there are no reporters on the level of sniffing around European ruling families,” added the prince, who is a Protestant minister.

Prince Philip said that although successful presidents made their mark with their statements, mentioning Roman Herzog and Richard von Weizsäcker as good examples, he said that words were not enough.

“This level of words is necessary, but they do not move people inside,” he said. “When our hearts are touched, we change. During the past football World Championship there emerged so much uncomplicated national consciousness that nose-wrinkling intellectuals no longer understood their country.

“Emotions are the field on which a royal family can play," he said. "They do not have to think up some programme, it goes to the hearts that they are simply there.”

He said the personal and family lives of politicians were regarded as private – but that those of royals were legitimately public.

“Of course a king should have a happy marriage. Of course the heir to the throne should marry,” he said.

And even the question of royal children was a legitimate matter for the public, he said. “When, as now in Sweden, a member of the royal family is born, what a joy goes through the country! Even the prime minister spoke of a happy day. The heart has a much more intensive influence than the appeal of the family minister for better framework conditions to combine family and career.”

The collapse of royal marriages can even be good for the country, he suggested, because the media scandalises bad behaviour conducted by royals. The collapse of a politician’s marriage is regarded as private, he said, or seen as part of a modern family.

The lives of a royal family lend a country stability, he said. “They are not thrown out by a vote of confidence or swept from office by their immunity from prosecution being lifted. That does a country good.”

He suggested that German politicians would even vote for a royal family to be reinstated, if it came to a vote – nearly a century after the last Kaiser was removed from the throne in 1918. Even left-wingers would be in favour, he suggested, pointing to Sweden where he said some socialists were also royalists.

But even if the German royal family were to be reinstated, Prince Philip would not sit on the throne – that honour would go to Prince Georg Friedrich von Preußen, who is the direct heir and has said he would not want to see a royal restoration.

Its true, royalty does provoke strong emotions. In my case, for instance, I have an overwhelming urge to cut their heads off

Though I have always had an interest in Old Fritz I would never consider myself a Royalist in this day and age. I was sure I was about to poo poo this article(for want of a better expression) but I find that a lot of what he says actually makes sense. At the end of the day,if we are not happy with our royal representatives we can always shout "Off with their heads"........

' the prince, who is a Protestant minister.'

well, i guess that answers the question as to how he can hold such irrational opinions..

And then? Consequently, Germany must become a "German Realm" or a "German Empire" again, too. Very charming. The neighbours would be oh so pleased. But let's not stop there: the Bundeswehr Wachbataillon would dress again in blue tunics, white trousers and Pickelhaube. The Berlin Stadtschloss would become the Kaiser's new (old) residence. Oh happy days. Unfortunately, I guess the German Constitutional Court will object, though...

With the presidents the Germans have had recently he should be given a try maybe just maybe he is not so corrupt .

And may I say thank you to the moderators for removing "klaus stoiber "

I don't know what he wrote but his normal contribution is obnoxious rubbish so you got in first.

So my comment got removed by theLocals staff. What I basically said is that we don't need a monarchy but a strong leader. That is all. How is this statement harmful? Hmmmmm
15:15 March 14, 2012 by catjones
germans have a forgetful nostalgia. Bring back the old buildings (Berlin-schloss), bring back the monarch, get rid of newfangled nuclear power. Ah, ja, the good old days with 'strong leaders'. Where would this end?
15:29 March 14, 2012 by Englishted
@klaus stoiber

Because in other sections you have called for the "return" of German land from Poland ,Belgium, and Holland and stated Germany didn't start ww2.

So which "strong leader " did you have in mind? did he come from Greater Germany sorry Austria as it is now ?.
15:42 March 14, 2012 by Navigator_B
The best candidate for German monarch would be Baron Theodor zu Guttenburg. The Deutsche Volk would look up to him as a perfectly honest character (plagiarising his doctorate was just an error).

His wife is also of royal blood and they have blond children who will make excellent breeding stock for future heirs to the throne.

With his military training and his experience as minister in charge of the Bundeswehr during the Afghan war he should have a better chance than the last Kaiser, if he starts another world war.
15:47 March 14, 2012 by klaus stoiber
Nothing wrong with bringing back old buildings as tourists will be able too see how the design of Berlin was designed with it as its central point. Sadly anti germans will always associate strong leaders with Hitler. When I mention strong leader I mean people such as Bismarck and Frederick the Great

A German King sitting on the Throne in Buckingham Palace. Sounds Historic.
22:07 March 14, 2012 by MaKo
Well, crikey! What did you expect a prince to say?
06:56 March 15, 2012 by HerLinder
A monarchy is a total waste of national dollars. Besides, we have football stars to look up to and idolize. Who needs a monarchy?
15:39 March 16, 2012 by rgf001
I think it is a great idea! Let's have a vote! Who wants to be king....How about me? Or better yet, how about a talent competition. Americans have American Idol, we can have Deutsche König/in. Please note I said it first... Do not copy the idea without sending royalties :-)

Hello All,

if you want German royals, we've got some to spare!

Funny...the lowest classes in every country also want free money, food and housing in return for no work.

Maybe the upper classes and the lowest classes are all the same.

But some dress better.

For now.

It makes more sense to support living German royalty than perpetuating the evil systematic fleecing and brainwashing of German minds with religious fantasies and dysfunctional personalities over 2 millennia in the form of state supported churches with special privileges, tax advantages, assumed superiority and power, and the cause of endless strife and misery on this planet. At least royalty is of this world, compassionate and accountable living humans like ourselves.

I'm a Royalist at heart. The symbol of the nation should be different than the political leader of the state. I love my country without limit, but loathe most of the spotty little weasels who run it. A ceremonial head of state who roots the nation in its whole history is a strong builder of this kind of love. Considering how badly Germany did for the first thirty years after they ditched royalty, it's a good idea.
16:53 March 17, 2012 by deutscherMann
I dont see why not if Germany wants to increase happiness in their country. After all, England has its own monarchy for almost 1000 years. Wouldn't be fair for Germany to have its own monarchy again?
01:14 March 18, 2012 by countgregor
I think the German People are relieved I am here in the USA and retired from a Fortune 500 Company. I own a vineyard in Upstate New York. If the monarchy is restored would I have to report for duty in Mainz? I am RETIRED---However if the old Princely County of Ostein wants me to come I will. Don't know what I would do, but I am sure there could be some suggestions. Gregory Richter Graf Von Ostein.

The article said:

"'And there are no reporters on the level of sniffing around European ruling families,' added the prince, who is a Protestant minister."

And:

"He said the personal and family lives of politicians were regarded as private but that those of royals were legitimately public."

Isn't that a contradiction. Did someone make some of this up or is he really is out of touch?
