Another week of freezing nights ahead

Saturday may have been the warmest day of the year so far, but high pressure is set to return, knocking down temperatures and bringing snow and rain over the coming week, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

But while the balmy temperatures may be a welcome relief from the recent sub-zero weather, they are not expected to continue, and thermometers will rarely sneak over five degrees in the coming week.
“It’s only going to be a harmless cold,” said Christoph Hartmann of the DWD. “The weather won’t be anything a few layers of clothes can’t solve.”
On Sunday weather coming from the Arctic will push temperatures to between zero and four degrees Celsius while stormy winds, snow and rain will dampen the penultimate day of Carnival festivities.
Heavy snowfall is expected in the Alpine region while lower areas may also see snow but will more likely see just a very rainy day.
During Sunday night, temperatures will drop even further to lows of minus 10 Celsius in the mountains and minus eight in the east.
Monday will be a little brighter in most areas apart from Bavaria and along the coastline where it will remain cloudy all day with a chance of snow and rain. Elsewhere in the country patches of chilly sunshine will bring relief from Sunday’s rain.
Temperatures will remain comfortable between two and six degrees Celcius.
On Monday night there may be a “dramatic drop in temperatures,” said Hartmann, as lows of minus 10 in southern states and lows of minus eight in the rest of the country will bring back memories of the recent big freeze. Longer relief should not be expected for a couple of weeks.
