Germany to fund new coal plants with climate change cash

The German government wants to encourage the construction of new coal and gas power plants with millions of euros from a fund for promoting clean energy and combating climate change.

Funding for the initiative is limited to five percent of the energy and climate change fund’s annual expenditure between 2013 and 2016.
Annual funding for the new plants could total more than €160 million per year between 2013 and 2014 alone, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The fund was first established to encourage nuclear plant operators to develop new, renewable forms of energy production. Now that nuclear power is to be phased out by 2022, the fund will pay for research into reducing carbon dioxide emissions from buildings, developing renewable energy sources and storage technologies for them.
Opposition politicians and environmental groups said the plan was wrong because it would promote what they argued were climate-damaging plants. They also worried that money earmarked for other valuable projects could be reduced as a result.
Oliver Krischer, a member in the Bundestag of the Green party, told the Berliner Zeitung that the country would do better to encourage more investment in energy efficiency
And the environmental pressure group Friends of the Earth Germany (BUND) said additional coal-fired plants were entirely unnecessary.
The Economics Ministry spokeswoman said that in any event, that Germany’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2020, would not be damaged by the new initiative.

So yeah lets get rid of Nuclear power and go back to strip mining Mountains for goal and produce more greenhouse gas. Good thinking Germany.
Germany is making the right decision. It is better to keep our people safe from radiantion of nuclear energy, and move back a step. However with our inteligence and creativeness, I promise you that will will build solar or some other energy to become our future. Technology is not always one direction. Humanity will get past over nuclear and its dangers and finally step forward to find a better energy. Right now using coal is good, and in future we will find better energy source. This is God's way to protect the German people.
Great comment. To pollute or not to pollute, that is the question. The latest generation LFTR technology works well and keeps Germany from the breast of Mother Russia.
In George Orwell's novel "1984" Big Brother declared that war is peace, slavery is freedom and ignorance is strength - messages that Germany's present-day war criminal Angel of Death Chancellor Angela Merkel continually gives over the continuing Afghan Holocaust and Afghan Genocide (5 million post-invasion violent deaths plus avoidable deaths from war-imposed deprivation; 2.7 million post-invasion under-5 infant deaths, 90% avoidable and due to US Alliance and German war crimes; and 3-4 million refugees).
However Big Brother also declared that 2 plus 2 does not equal 4 and that is evidently the New Mathematics line adopted by the Acute Angle of Death Chancellor Angela Merkel who is pointedly saying of German carbon pollution policy that more CO2 means less.
Top German climate scientist Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber (Director of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, University of Potsdam) has estimated that for a 67% chance of avoiding a catastrophic 2 degree Centigrade temperature rise the World must cease CO2 emissions by 2050 and that relatively high per capita CO2 polluter Germany (roughly twice global average) must cease by about 2031 (for Professor Schellnhuber's expert analysis Google "terra quasi incognita").
But as to coal, we have our President over here wanting to shut down coal plants and drive up the cost of electricity. He said so during his campaign. Didn't try to hide it. November 2012 cannot come quick enough to vote the scoundrel out of office.
And, of course global warming is caused by the sun @MarshaLynn. If it weren't for the sun, the Earth would just be a very cold rock! But, greenhouse gases, by their very definition, trap heat in the atmosphere which would normally radiate into space. Whether or not man's activities contribute significantly to those green house gases is the question - and coal plants and natural gas plants certainly don't reduce the amount of CO2 we dump into the atmosphere.
Do you ever wonder what happens to all the waste from a coal plant?
After studying LFTR, which I failed to perform earlier, I realise my mistake. Although, I do find it interesting that the Chinese are pursuing this possibility at full pace. Perhaps others will make the attempt as well. So, I wonder if there are any others seriously attempting to make LFTR a viable option in the near future.
I will await an response while I down large dollops of Humble pie. Thank you. :-)
