Members of French women's football team pose naked

With France set to face defending champions and hosts Germany at the women's World Cup on Tuesday, members of the French squad have posed naked for pictures to draw attention to their sport.

Gaetine Thiney, 25, plus Elodie Thomis, 24, and Corine Franco, 27, said they posed provocatively for the pictures which appear in Sunday's edition of Bild to spark controversy and generate publicity.

The trio posed for the pictures under the motto: "Is this how we should show up before you come to our games?"

Fresh from their 4-0 hammering of Canada last week, in which Thiney scored twice and Thomis also netted, the trio said they want to draw attention to their sport and create some debate of the women's game.

"The pictures have come out really nice and I really like them," Thiney told Bild.

"We wanted to provoke and to generate some discussion."

The French star also praised hosts Germany, who have won the last two World Cups, where she says the women's game is far more advanced than in her country.

"Women's football here has developed well and already taken a step further than in France."

But Thiney said it was important the French players now back up the attention-seeking pictures off the pitch with success on the field.

"We will try to get more attention through our success," she said with an eye on Tuesday's match against Germany in Möchengladbach.

The hosts also got in on the act last month when players from Germany's womens league posed for Playboy.

The players left little to the imagination in their football-themed pictures.

If you want to bring attention to the game, then step up your game and play it well! My 8 year old daughter looks up to these women and I am so disappointed that this is how they choose to get attention. Have a little respect for yourselves and be the role models our girls need! Just because can pose naked, doesn't mean you should! I can only imagine how "proud" your families must be of you!

The French readership of "Bild" is as low as you can get it. The attention Les Bleues would need to catch is from French fans, who still couldn't care less. The French press absolutely ignored the stunt, so did the sports media. I had to Google(.fr) "les Bleues nues pour Bild", and found a total of... just TWO blog articles mentioning it.

It's a pity there's so much indifference towards women's sports in France, and indeed it does not look like stripping makes any difference.

Do they swap shirts at the end of the match?

I have no problem with that, use what you got to sell it any way you can. And sex does sell.

Now I see why there's no mention of this is the French media at all. It's because this news is, erm, TWO YEARS OLD...

This PR stunt from the French was indeed publicised at the time when it was news, in March 2009, with a well-meaning message that said "Should we go that far for you to pay attention to us?". For Bild, it's never too late to show a bit of flesh to its ogling readership... Journalism at its best....

*Sigh*
