Petrol station charges €9.99 a litre for gas

Police were called after a petrol station near Stuttgart began charging €9.99 per litre ($40 per gallon) of super gasoline amid dwindling supplies on Easter Monday.

In the town of Filderstadt, south of the Baden-Württemberg capital, the Esso petrol station apparently raised the price to a prohibitive level in a deliberate attempt to dissuade motorists from buying it, police reported. The station was running low on the fuel amid a nationwide shortage.

Nevertheless, several customers still used the pump, despite the fact that it actually carried a warning sign against filling up with super. They were then taken by complete surprise when they got to the cash register.

Customer Yunus G. told daily Bild he put 21 litres in his BMW and was asked to pay €209.98.

“I didn’t pay attention to the price. Who expects something like that? Nearly €10 for one litre? It’s a swindle,” he said.

He called the police but was told he needed to pay, otherwise the Esso station would make a complaint.

One woman from Filderstadt was asked to pay just under €200 for 20 litres. Another customer filled up with 10 litres. Both also refused to pay and instead called the police.

The Esso attendant had done nothing wrong, police said, because he had no say in the fuel price.

“The price was determined by the head office,” a police spokesman said.

The customers eventually paid for their petrol and were hoping to sort out a compromise with Esso on Tuesday. Nobody from the station was prepared to comment on Monday afternoon.

Rainer Hillgärtner, spokesman for the Auto Club Europa said the case “resembled the black market.”

“It’s barely believable that global companies blunder into a supply bottleneck like drunks into a village pond,” he said. “The relevant inspectorate has to investigate. That goes also for unfair price rises and exorbitant prices at the pump.”

About one in five petrol stations in and around Stuttgart had run dry of super on Monday afternoon. There was a choke on fuel supplies across the country because of the combination of Easter traffic, the holiday ban on fuel tankers, and logistical problems for petrol companies associated with the introduction of the E10 ethanol fuel.

But it had not been as bad as expected, according to Shell spokeswoman Cornelia Wolber.

“The situation is for nowhere near as bad as feared,” she said.

I have a car that runs only super plus, I have had to park it for days at a time due to the gas station being out of super plus and not daring to take the chance to go to another. Good thing I have two cars!

In the US this would cost $1000 to fill up my 25 gallon tank(Work Truck). It would be time for a Revolution starting at the Gouging Gas Station.

Just who exactly is the idiot? The petrol station puts a sign on the pump that says "Do not buy this petrol. It is €9.99 per litre ($40 per gallon. Or the idiot who comes along, ignores the sign, ignores the pump price per litre and ignores the increasing cost on the pumped petrol gauge. Just proves the axiom, :No matter how idiot proof you make it, they will always come up with a better idiot."

Oh Yea, The Oil Reserves in the Middle East are only about 5% of the Worlds Oil. The Gulf of Mexico Oil Leak last year spewed Thousands of Gallon a Day. This Is your Clew to how much oil is in the Gulf of Mexico alone. The hills in Montana are Loaded with Oil along with many locations around the World. If a Government tries to ship out too much oil like Hussein did in Iraq they are trumped up on charges of having Weapons of Mass Destruction or some other charge and Killed off. The Governments around the World keep a cap on this info so the Few Fortunate ones around the World can live in the Lap of Luxury. It is a sham you don't have enough Petrol in your Gas Stations. Wake Up!

I got it, you want it and now you'll have to pay my price if you want to buy from me. Where's the problem?
18:57 April 26, 2011 by jmclewis
The German Government made this problem by forcing E10 a fuel that solves nothing on the German Public.

We Don't Need It. Humanity Survived for Untold Thousands of years without Oil. We are just Spoiled by all the Luxuries it creates for us. We have only just begun to tap Wind and Water Energy Harvesting. Using the Magnetic Energy of the Earth will be our biggest breakthrough in the Future when Enough People get fed up with the resulting Pollution that Oil Burning causes. Nuclear Technology should be put aside because we don't know what to do with the toxic waste it creates or when earthquakes and tsunami's destroy the generating stations. People do not want to give up their luxury Houses,Cars and Vacations. So we will have to wait until People Wake Up.

Can you imagine the amount of ESSO Tiger tokens you would have got though? Enough to get an ESSO t-shirt, bottle opener, base ball cap and maybe even an air freshener.

See it's not all bad!?

Germans are crazy about fuel and octane. Just pump E10; nothing will happen to your precious car.
23:00 April 26, 2011 by dcgi
Keep it simple. Name the petrol station, if it's one of a chain which it sounds like it is, boycott the buggers.
23:10 April 26, 2011 by chuck69
I thought it was just our stupid government here in the US forcing us to use ethanol fuel. Only about 10% of the cars here are designed to burn it, and none of the lawn mowers, boats, etc. will burn it. Why do they force us to use this crap?
23:45 April 26, 2011 by J-Dub
If you want to pump E10, go right ahead...but this coming from an Automotive Technician of 15+ years...E10 is the diarrhea of Petrol. The time it lasts in your automobile is practically NOTHING. The way the E10 fuel burns in most automobiles, you would think that the Octane was replaced with water. This is the reason why the German government is continually FORCING it on us...because they all know that it has MINIMAL octane, forcing us to keep pumping it in our automobiles, thus making more TAX money for the German government...pretty sly and clever, but most of us Auto Junkies are too smart for even the Government....If everyone would just refuse to drive their automobiles, refuse to use public transit, and stay at home and not work for a day or two in protest, the German politicians would cry like sissies and most likely give everyone what they want to save their political careers.

So they saw the sign, saw the warning, saw the price (all of which was posted directly next to the pump) and then act shocked when it turns out that they have to pay what the sign said. Good on the police for forcing them to pay.

My, my, my, the price of a commodity goes up and it's a conspiracy. When the price goes down where does the conspiracy go?

When everyone in China and India starts driving 10eur will be the good old days. It's not about supply, it's about demand and refining capacity.

Pretty hard to feel sorry for the person who ignored the sign which said DONT PUMP THIS GAS!!!!.
14:54 April 27, 2011 by vossy
Well our gvt in the UK recently cut 1p per litre in tax and taxed the oil companies for an EXTRA 2 BILLION GBP saying that the oil companies would not put up the price?? The oil companies have put up the price to cover the cost of the extra tax burden - now is this a stupid government or what?? Diesel fuel here now averages around £1.43 per litre and petrol is £1.36 per litre. Why is the cost of fuel rising? It can only be oil company greed - Shell make almost €2 million an HOUR in profit.

And here I thought that my heart stopping bill of $57.39 for 13.166 gallons (87 octane) of gas this morning was a complete rip off. I guess I should consider myself lucky after reading this article. Although, it doesn¦#39;t feel like it when I consider that I have a 50 mile round trip commute to and from work every day.

Germans should try "one if by land" and "two if by sea".

It worked in America and will very soon be effective if the Good for Nothing Socialist-Communist NDP take power in Canada.

We need to remember that oil is traded all over the world via US dollars. Therefore the price of oil is a constant all over the world. Most oil companies make about $.03 per gallon. the profit margin is slim. But the amounts are big due to economy of scale. The government however makes a %100 profit. And in America the federal tax on a gallon of fuel is about $.18 The average state tax on fuel is $.27 So. The oil companies are considered evil monsters for making $.03 per gallon. The federal governments answer is to tell the citizens that they will punish the oil barons and raise the taxes on the evil oil companies profits. Thereby raising the cost of fuel.

Of course we in America have a huge amount of oil under our feet. Both in Alaska, Montana, North And South Dakota But alas, We can't get at it because we might disturb some insect.
