Stormy weather ahead

The German Weather Service issued a 24-hour storm warning for the northwestern coast on Tuesday, predicting gale-force winds and heavy rainfall with similar conditions expected in the southwest later in the day.

Northern and eastern Germany are currently under a high pressure system from Scandinavia, while low pressure systems are influencing weather in western and southern regions, DWD meteorologist Marcus Beyer said in a statement.

The clashing weather patterns are likely to bring heavy, persistent rain to parts of the country on Tuesday, with isolated storm conditions along the North Sea coast and in the west, he said. High temperatures will range between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Overnight rainy conditions will spread across the northern half of the country, with stormy winds along the coast and brief showers also expected in the southwest, Beyer said.

Wednesday will dawn with heavy cloud cover across much of the country, with widespread rain showers developing into thunderstorms, particularly in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg and in the Alps.

The northeast will be spared from the rain briefly, though, with sunshine expected in the states of Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein. A bit of sun may also bless the outer western regions too, Beyer predicted.

Rainfall will set in overnight from central Germany all the way to southern Bavaria, with soggy conditions continuing into Thursday for the entire eastern half of the country, Beyer said. Thunderstorms could also develop later in the southwest and west, he added.

But the northeast and west will remain dry with a high likelihood of sunshine.
Thursday night will bring rain to most of Germany, with more showers expected for central regions on Friday, Beyer added.
