Erdogan urges Germany to allow dual citizenship

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday urged Germany, where some three million people of Turkish origin live, to loosen its rules for dual citizenship.

"I find it very regrettable that Germany is among the countries in the European Union that does notallow it (dual citizenship)" he told the German weekly Die Zeit.

"I hope that Germany will also allow it one day," he said ahead of a visit by Chancellor Angela Merkel to Turkey next week.

Germany only allows citizens to hold the nationality of another state in exceptional circumstances, such as in the case of European Union citizens.

A child of foreign parents born in Germany can obtain dual citizenship if one parent has lived in the country regularly for at least eight years. But the child must choose one of the two nationalities by his 23rd birthday.

Erdogan, who raised hackles in 2008 for opposing the assimilation of people of Turkish lineage in German society, underlined his support for Turkish secondary schools in Germany.

"In Turkey, we have German high schools – why shouldn't there be Turkish high schools in Germany?" he asked.

He also said Ankara would settle for nothing less than full membership in the European Union – a stance putting himself on a collision course with Merkel, who only supports a “privileged partnership” for Turkey.

"There are intertwined relations between Turkey and the EU. There are 35 chapters in the (membership) talks. I am confident that 27-28 of them can be taken up and this will really mean a privileged partnership," she told Turkish daily Milliyet on Wednesday.

"Some issues, like institutional integration, will be left out of the scope," she told a group of Turkish reporters.

Merkel however stressed the European Union placed "great importance" on the need for Turkey to follow a foreign policy consistent with the bloc's stance.

Germany's objections that the sizeable mainly Muslim country is not fit for membership are backed by another EU heavyweight, France, but Ankara points out that it has already opened negotiations aimed at becoming a proper member of the bloc.

“A privileged partnership is unknown to EU treaties,” Erdogan told Die Zeit. “For Turkey it would be a huge mistake to agree to that. And most of the other EU countries don’t accept this suggestion either.”

The foundation for single citizenship is for revenues from taxes. Germany needs tax revenues. Too many expenses and not enough of the revenue lines. Years of dual citizenship in the EU has come to an end because of the crisis. Germany needs citizens to stay and not move. Turkei wants the majority of Germany's immigrants to allow them to return to Turkei to visit family. The hard line stance means that Germany needs more future revenue from taxes to pay its debt service so it needs more bodies. Thats the real reason for the No Dual Citizenship clause in Germany.

Germany;s fertility rate is 1.3x. They are no longer making kids. This number is mathematically & statistically irreversiable. The EU has madated laws that immigration will come from the Middle East & Africa. They need to be more "open" and "friendly" to these immigrants thru better integration. Not allowing them dual citizenship is a denial of their basic rights to choose their sovereignty so they can visit family.

In ten years you may see two street signs on every German Street, one in German and one for Turkish. Mosques will stand by Christian Churches. Germans will contend with Sharia Laws and the honor killings of children. Germans need to ask if this is the Germany they want to deliver to their children.

People condemn Switzerland for drawing their own line in the sand of what they will and will not tolerate. Is Germany strong enough to do the same?

Well, the truth is, ALL PEOPLE and CULTURES are valuable.

Therefore we are all obligated to do what we can do preserve each one. There are still great cultures in Europe. Germans and other white people are important too, and so is Christianity. And there is no such thing as irreversible birht rates, because there is absolutely no science to back such a claim.

With the appropriate circumstances, German women would have more children. It's just that there are so many problems in Germany, that many of them see having kids as being unrealistic.

What I find interesting is that how could a nation of more than 80 million people, not find at least a handfull of bright and intelligent individuals to lead the country to stability and prosperity.

And I am not suggesting Germany only allows blue eyed, blond immigrants to apply for citizenship. Much like Austrailia did in the 70's Germany needs to connect entry application with job experience/education.

Hey look at other nations even with alot of difficulties and problems they are having children and keeping the population in balance. But just blaming Germany for their rules is an excuse,, instead the women should be made secure in relationship matter, the men should be sincere enugh to make his wife secure to get the babies . You will see the baby boomers there , from the white women as well !

I'm neither CPT/USA nor a Republican, but try googling on "detroit muslim"; I especially like the article "81% of Detroit Muslims want Sharia in Muslim Countries."

And don't forget Erdogan's comment "You cannot be both secular and a Muslim."

@Aschaffenburgboy: Dont bother. In the US, freedom is an ideal and value. In Germany, freedom is something you read about in books and not expressed. Notice the latest UN slap at Germany for being too racist to immigrants. By the way, Mosque's will not stand next to churches. Churches are being replaced by Mosques. Remember, this is the "Athiest" and "non-believing" state. The NWO will take care of those who dont obey!!!

Lets hope Germans disagree. Turkey has everything to gain. Consider how the country is run. They will dump all of their illiterate and criminal elements onto your streets and social rolls. Germany gains nothing. Where a person comes from speaks to what they will bring. Rarely is this not true. Dont believe me. Look at the paradise the states call Detroit. Once a marvel to the world. Now, a disgrace.

There are 80 plus million people continuing a TRADITION of stability and prosperity in Germany.

You can't hold up a country like the US as an example of something better, it is only different. In my opinion not better, it's dominated by corporate and financial types who are allowed to feed off of the middle class, bubble after, scham after bubble.

And they get away with it because the American mentality doesn't condemm such bogus thievery. The losers are simply jealous and pissed they got taken and left more determined to particpate again but next time to be a screwer not a screwee.

If Turks will be majority in Germany then after a while Germany will be just another Turkey. East Prussia used to be a prosperous region too, now it is just another Russia.I don't see why peschvogel is so happy about.

Four out of ten British muslims want sharia in UK. A very large proportion fail to condemn the likes of al-quaeda. Even the godawful government there is pandering to this poison by offering sharia courts in marriage cases. Little by little Islam achieves its objectives.

Having spent extensive time on several occasions in the Levant and beyond I've found the people to be exceptionally hospitable. But they are beyond brainwashed. I've been to madrassas where it is the only place to get educated. If your boy doesn't spend all days with the imams then he and especially the parents will know the wrath of control freak apparatchiks of Islam. Say goodbye to your job. Say goodbye to your friends. There is no space whatsoever for dissent or other world views. Is this what you want?

Absolutely NOT true! You're either miss informed or teying to take advantage to make a point.

Most countries recognize dual citizenship by BIRTH only. Almost none do in the case of naturalized citizens. The US in particular requires that one renounce ALL other citizenships.

What we need now, honestly, is militant secularism. Muslims particularly (and even Catholics, in the present and other religious sects) have shown an absolute disloyalty to notions of individual liberty. They are DANGEROUS and must be vigilantly counteracted. Life is a 'one-shot deal'. It is short and precious and filled with other perils like disease that are often out of our control. Why let these bullies -- particularly -- the Muslims dictate to us. So what if the economy falters in Germany -- economic prospertiy at the cost of hastening the demise of the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness is not so great a cost. And besides Germans/Europeans need to learn to procreate.

The EU allowed immigration however, they did this "because" they don't want to see the EU's economic interests collapse. You must be kind to these people. The time for Germans and Europeans to procreate is over. The numbers have fallen so far behind replacement, the numbers cannot be reversed.

Well, dbert4 misunderstood my comments. I'm both American and German. And I'm willing to go on the record and say that no one cares about the countries as much as I do.

Many people see Norway and Denmark as the examples of success.

Both are very efficient and stable, so much so that very little "negative" news comes from these contries.

I personally have traveled to both and found them to be extraordinary, especially Norway.

It would be a wonderful if America and Germany were as stable, successful and prosperous as the former Vikings.

I'm sitting opposite a Realshule in a major german city and about 300 mid/late-teens wandering around chatting and generally being teens. I know that about 30% of them are from a turkish background - but, I can't tell which. No scarves let alone hijab, no prayer mats, little hats, crosses.. I cannot see one sign of any religion. These kids are as secular as anywhere I've ever been and far more so than most places I've lived.

And, you are trying to tell me that in 10 years once they're settled with a family to provide for they will have enthousiasm to call for sharia law. You are on the wrong planet!

I say lay down and let the Socialists roll over you. Why not have Islam be your religion while you are at it? In fact why wait. Just convince the German people that with the current birth rate they need to just die off like every other silly nationality in the Old Europe.

Hey, it is social justice after all.

In America we are about to import more illegal alliens to vote for Barack Obama because the current residents have figured out that he is a closet Communist and are refusing to support him anymore.Oh wait, I exagerated, it is only 70 % of the American people who have figured that out. My bad.

Germany has made this a mandate to pass in the Parliment last year for the CDU platform and now they must deliver. Besides the Government needs taxes from "citizens" not "gestarbeiter" and their kin. Expect Germany to move more to the right on this vote and wont cave into pressure from Turkei.

@internationalwatch: Its not about racial prejudice, but its about money. Tax revenues needed for an economy which is not diverse and swimming in debt. Of course, most Eurpean kids come from two different nations but this is not about nationalization. Its about tax revenues and making citizens pay for future fees, taxes, laws etc...Nothing to do with what you say...Think bigger picture....

Don't do it. You will become a third world country based on Sharia Law. Let them go back to Turkey and build on their own society. Germany and other Europen countries need to keep their borders,culture and heritage. And we are tired of hearing that this is racisim. It is not .

No, these folks are staying in Germany. They can try to get a job, but if not, then no worries...Germany will give you wonderful benefits to stay at home and have kids.

Culture, heritage? Have you been there lately? Sounds like you havent been there lately. The middle east and africans are going to come more because that is the answer. Its EU's mandate. Not the mandate of cultural or historische centers.

Economically, EU needs people, kids, immigrants, and all they cant make stay in Europe. The birth rates are irreversable, so if they do as you say, populations will die sooner than later. The fertility rate is below replacment level at 1.3. You need 2.11 to maintain a culture. Mathematically and statistically, you cannot reverse those numbers. Even if you do as you say, kick em out. Raus

I wholly endorse dual citizenship for Germany, as well as for other countries.

But is Erdogan really in a position to be telling other countries how to be more progressive and accepting for multiculturalism, particularly multicultural issues stemming from a difficult political history?

Immigrants dont just pay the 5% "einheit" tax for E. Germany with the dying population and nazi's, everyone has to pay for that. So dont give me the downtrodden story on the immigrants pulls on your tini tiny heart strings. Get over it.

Germany dont want immigrants, thats why they should leave. But, the immigrants hold the cards here because if they leave, which they cant, the economy would collapse. They do jobs no German would ever get their hands dirty doing.

This bill has "already" been debated in the Parliment and if you listen, its being killed.

Funny to hear the Turkish prime minister to indicate Germany, and maybe other countries will follow, what they should do.

Build turkish school in Germany,allow dual citizenship.........

Who the prime minister of a country which slaughtered more than 3 millions Christians.

In a country where being anything else than Turk or even having a critical opinion about Kemal is a crime.

Go ahead Germany and in some years you will not need the German schools..

PS. I do not live in German but in USA , however I have lived in Europe.

What about citizenship for those who were born in Germany. I made the mistake of naturalising in another country and now am not allowed to get back my German citizenship although I would gladly give up the citizenship I have. I have tried over and over and paid thousands but am refused what I think is my birthright. I have to apply for a visa to visit my family, now that is not right. OR??
