Germany under ice Queen's spell

Published: 7 Feb 10 14:11 CET

Germany’s roads and footpaths will remain treacherously slippery for some days to come, with freezing temperatures and some snow set to preserve a sheet of ice on the ground, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported Sunday.

Low pressure system “Queen” is set to bring some snow early in the week, the DWD said. Maximum temperatures on Monday will likely range between -5 degrees and zero degrees, but fall as low as -7 degrees in eastern parts of the country.

Only along the Rhine and its tributaries will the temperature crawl just above freezing.

Overnight fog and clouds will give way to clearer skies and largely dry conditions with temperatures falling as low as -15 degrees in the east.

On Tuesday the southwest will see more snow, along with central and western regions of Germany too. Otherwise conditions will remain changeable, particularly in the east and north of the country.

Wednesday will see the heaviest cloud cover, with top temperatures between -6 degrees and -1 degrees.

"Germany¦#39;s roads and footpaths will remain treacherously slippery for some days to come....."

Wouldn't it make sense just to clean the damn streets and sidewalks in the first place?

at dkt7.

That would make sense, but would mean getting the public services to actually work when they are needed instead of talking about pay-raises during this needy time. All politics. In summer when they are not needed so much, they will be in your way cleaning non existent rubbish from the streets and handing out tickets for minor offences such as cycling part of your way on a pavement because you cannot easily access the road from your apartment block due to over-parked and badly parked cars.

Oooh, get public workers to go out in the cold and not drink coffee in their offices at 7am. Then another break at 9am for Breakfast (always though you had that before you left for work).

No, no no, best keep the walkways icy so the public workers can stay warm and plan their next strike in peace and quiet.
