Two people put each other in hospital over shopping cart

Published: 13 Dec 09 15:16 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/national/20091213-23915.html

A row between a 74-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman over a supermarket cart in Aachen escalated into a violent altercation in which two people required emergency treatment.

The argument concerned the last trolley available outside a supermarket in Aachen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The situation got out of hand when the younger brother of the woman hit the old man in the face.

The tensions were carried over into the supermarket until the situation boiled over at the cheese department. Here, the mother of the young man who hit the man tried to intervene, and the 74-year-old pushed her onto the glass counter.

This ended the fight, but both the 53-year-old mother and the 74-year-old were taken to hospital in an ambulance. An investigation has been opened to clarify how the fight started.

They should be put in a cage to fight....

Having been told never to hit a woman and to respect age, this might be interesting. Which one was the ossie?

funny, so, a woman (35 yo), her younger brother (x year old) and their 53 years old mother were up against 74 years old man. the younger brother hit the 74 years old man on the face. and then the 74 years old got his sweet revenge, pushing their 53 years old mother onto the glass counter...

LOL.. LOL... LOL.. put them all in a cage, circus in hamburg. perhaps, it will help. especially, for the younger brother... hahaha

I can just picture it. Old man going for the trolley. Young woman in typical ignorant German fashion runs to get it ahead of him (we have all seen this behaviour often in Germany). Old man is annoyed and lets young woman know what he thinks of her. She being from a low level family, calls in the relatives and brother hits the old man. Row continues in the supermarket and the mother gives her 10 cents worth also. Three scum against one poor old man. Old man being from the generation that knows how to fight their corner decides to do something to defend himself. Pushes the old Schlampe away. Good on him.

In all fairness, who hits an old man of 74 in the first place and what type of 34 year old woman gets into an argument with a 74 year old man over a trolley. Not the sort of woman you would introduce to your family as your girlfriend. LOL

My old work associate was being taken around by the real estate guy when he first got to Germany. They stopped at a light, with one car in front of them. He started to notice the car in front rocking.....back and forth. Then he noticed the couple were whacking each other as hard as possible. Both he and the real estate guy watched this fight take place....middle-aged couple....light went green....and they kept on fight....till the light turned red again.

What I've noticed is that once a German reaches full fury.....he won't hesitate to blast anyone....even relatives. And it can go physical in a matter of seconds.

Would this have happened if stores were open on Sundays?

I was at a supermarket yesterday in the US. With about 5 people in line at the register another cashier came up and opened her register saying that she could take the next person in line. The next person in line happened to be me, with one person in front checking out and 3 behind me.

All three people behind me immediately tried to adjust their trolleys so that I could easily go to the newly opened register. I thanked them told them to please go ahead as I could wait. The line (which by this point had grown by a few) orderly split into two groups with everyone politely allowing the people in front of them to select whether to switch to the new lane or stay put.

No one was unfriendly, no one ran for the new register or tried to beat the other shoppers down with their trolley to be first. And I thought, wow...this is completely normal here. In fact, a different scenario would appear to be completely out of the question. Yet in Germany, this would have NEVER happened.

Some on this forum may leave comments (as in the restaurant service story) about how much they hate false American courtesy and politeness, but I'd say they're wrong. There's nothing false about it.

There are differing levels of mutual respect and courtesy in the world and in Germany it seems to be very lacking. With no respect for each other, things like this are bound to happen, and probably occur much more than is reported.

This is a world wide phenomenon. Don't think Germany has the monopoly on rude, uncouth, selfish behavior. People are not taught manners as part of the education curriculum today. The juvenile courts help little by reinforcing such behavior with weak or no sentencing. People grow up knowing that society cannot impact on their animalistic behavior. When will the pendulum swing back to community rights instead of individual rights and political correctness? Give me old fashioned values and a well mannered society any day.

Lexicon,

oh, then I am certainly relieved that nothing like this ever happens in the US. I just wonder what to think about news like this, though:

Oblomov, you're obviously trying to create arguments where none exist.

Violence and bad behavior happens everywhere and of course I did not say it never happens in the US.

But, the aggressive rude behavior that precipitates such actions is not the norm in the US, especially when it comes to providing each other with common courtesy in stores.
01:37 December 14, 2009 by Oblomov
OK, people in the US are apparently more courteously violent.
06:35 December 14, 2009 by adnaw
I do not get it. What is it that people need to behave in such a way toward each other.

Did no-one concerned have the dignity to just back off and walk away?

Evidently not given the outcome.

Walking away is really not that difficult.

It is actually a wiser person who does back away, contary to popular belief.

Oh god! what a narrowminded responses here, a small happening in Germany that is commonly happened everywhere in this planet the German haters make a ride and try to portray that only Germans have this kind of attitudes, wake up people,if you envy what Germans have you better work more hard so that your or our country will overtake germany (will not happen anyway)

I love Germany than my country UK.I experienced more worst than this in my own land.
09:37 December 14, 2009 by LancashireLad
@Lexicon

Can you guys please look beyond your own borders? The situation you described would also have happened in the UK and very probably many other countries around the world too.

@berlinski

I can see half of your argument, but I'll bet that the guy was cantankerous and argumentative too. Basically 6 of one and half a dozen of the other - just like in a kindergarten only the children are bigger which is why it got to hospital.

@adnaw

Sadly not. You're talking about the only country I know of (admittedly there may be more) that needs Haftplflichtversicherung - insurance in case somebody sues you. For many people, attack is their only defence to try to scare people away, regardless of whether or not it is warranted.
09:45 December 14, 2009 by Helligånds
Yes, Germany is a country to be envied.

Manchesgirl

You really thing that people putting each other in hospital *over a shopping trolley* happens everywhere? It certainly wouldn't happen in any part of the UK that I've been in. People would be too embarrassed to act like kindrgarten children. Yes, there might even be a heated discussion, but it wouldn't come to blows. I also cannot imagine it happening all over the world, so please do not insult the rest of the world.
11:31 December 14, 2009 by lordkorner
But of course this kind of behavior can happen anywhere, and its simply naive to think otherwise, what I really want to know is if there was anyone playing a piano...
12:02 December 14, 2009 by LancashireLad
That kind of behaviour - yes, but over slightly more important reasons one would hope (not that violence is ever a sloution).

But over a *shopping trolley*??? Only in a kindergarten.

"Why did you hit, her?"

"Because she took my favourite choo-choo train."

"But you weren't playing with it !!"

"Doesn't matter - it's mine !!!"

"The toys are for all of the children in the kindergarten to play with."

"IT'S MINE !!!! WAHHHH!!! MUMMY !!!!"
16:36 December 14, 2009 by Deviate
I could easily see this happening, if not with a more severe outcome, in my neck of the woods (Dallas/Ft Worth, Texas).

Sadly, situations like this are bound to occur when you get 2+ selfish idiots in one space.
08:29 December 15, 2009 by MaKo
All I can say is, HA.

Of course, this is a sickening story. But thanks for publishing it, Local, I'll be thrilled to mention it during the next smirky sermon on bad American consumer behavior that I'm doubtless soon to hear.
09:25 December 15, 2009 by rostguy
So many children also discussing this issue.
12:31 December 15, 2009 by mobiusro
This can happen anywhere and because of smaller things even. It all depends on personal social education and common sense. Some have it, some don't.

It depends on the mood as well. If one is utterly pissed because of whatever other reason and some "dude" / "gal" rubs you the wrong way you might be surprised about your own reactions.
12:45 December 15, 2009 by Jollyjack
How come there were so few shopping carts?
16:21 December 18, 2009 by Badger1911
Pre-Xmas chaos. That's normal.

You should see what's happening in normal traffic these days. Just recently a man from Kuwait attacked another person with an axe in Germany in a traffic situation. Germany's going to the sewers.
