Informant goes on trial for neo-Nazi radio station

Published: 16 Nov 09 12:25 CET

In an embarrassing situation for Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, one of its paid informants in the neo-Nazi scene went on trial Monday for running a radio station that called for the nuclear destruction of Israel, daily Tagesspiegel reported.

The 31-year-old woman, Sandra F., is among seven neo-Nazis accused of running the internet radio station European Brotherhood Radio, which also carried instructions on how to build bombs that used broken glass as deadly shrapnel.

It also played neo-Nazi music and had interviews with far-right leaders, including members of Frontbann 24, a group recently banned by the Berlin state government, the paper reported.

Sandra F. had been an informant for the Office of Constitutional Protection in Lower Saxony, or Verfassungsschutz, from late 2007 until she and the other accused were arrested in March.

She was recruited to spy on the nationalist German People’s Union (DVU) and received a modest compensation for the information she provided.

It appears that her involvement with the radio station was not known to the Verfassungsschutz until the state police began investigating her and her co-defendants, the paper reported.

The case therefore has uncomfortable echoes of previous instances of out-of-control, far-right informants for the Verfassungsschutz.

In 2003, when the federal government tried to ban the far-right National Democratic Party, the case collapsed amid farce when the country's highest court discovered that many sections of the party’s platform may have been written by paid informants of the security services.

In the trial, which started Monday morning and is expected to run until early December, the defendants, five men and two women, are accused of running or supporting the radio station between November 2005 and March 2009.

The station also denied or even celebrated the Holocaust and often used phrases such as “Heil Hitler,” “Sieg Heil” and “death to Zion.” The internet site described Nazi leader Adolf Hitler as "the people’s greatest son.”

Germany!! Germany!! Germany!! YOU AER A DISGRACE TO THE WHOLE WESTERN WORLD!! I think the EU, G8, UN and all international bodies should suspend this country until they ban all those groups!! what on earth are the politicians doing?? the funny thing is that the "police" support these groups, they will rather spend their useless time & tax payers money, searching for Black people/African Immigrants to deport!rather than cleaning up this awful, disgraceful mess. Oh God help us!!:-)

The Verfassungsschutz rightly uses informers. However, as these organizations are by their nature full of insecure and dangerous zealots, the Verfassungsschutz should back the informer system with their own infiltrators. Had they had their own agents as infiltrators, this might not have happened.

Of course their own infiltrators could be "out of control" and sympathetic to the DVU or were simply looking for much bigger fish in the wider intelligence gathering.

If they had been ignoring the radio station as a small fish when they were angleling for something bigger, ignoring Sandra F's activities might have been a price worth paying. However, we shall never know.

Nothing is ever clear cut and neatly packed in the intelligence world.

A "nuke Israel" radioshow?

Thats what i call devotionate undercover work. :-D Who would have suspected him? *lol*

Seriously, such things happened before.

There was once a young soldier who looked for a job after the end of ww1.

He became an informant for the bavarian police and infiltrated a small political party from the radical ultra-right for them.

That party's name was DAP , Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. (German Labour Party)

The name of that young informant was Adolf Hitler. He soon turned from a police spy into a passionate follower of the party and quickly became their greatest speaker.

It was also him who later suggested to add that "National Socialist" to he party's name and agenda turning it into the NSDAP commenly known as the Nazi party.

hey johnne,

you are the confused one here. the police "waste time and money" hunting illegal immigrants?..what part of illegal dont you get? that means its against the law to be one! can you dig that?...and as far as "banning" groups ...thats just ignorant!...banning free speech and free thought is cool with you? its not cool to me!...obviously you are fairly left of center and prefer illegals roaming free and indiginous people gagged. real smart... smoke another joint hippy!

Johnne-

Where are you from? Do you have any concept of European politics? If by these groups existing in Germany makes them 'a disgrace to the entire western world', what do you call Austria where the ultra right took around 32% of the vote in the last election.

Grow up and educate yourself. Germany is quite vigilant about these groups.

Well, people shouldn't be so quick to point fingers at Germany. There will never be a nation that is free of flaws.

And you must admit that Germany has done may things to move away from the past.

I'm not the only person who wants to see Germany evolve and grow. There are many of us out there. Surely we want Germany to be very successful. But we want to achieve prosperity under moral circustances.

I seek perfection. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact it should be the goal of everyone. How logical is it to give just 50 percent effort?

And I have come to realize that perfection can only be achieved through morality. There simply is no other way.
