Pilots report surge in laser pointer attacks during landings

Pilots have been reporting an increasing number of potentially deadly attacks on commercial jets with laser pointers during night landings at major German airports.

According the country’s DFS air traffic authority, reports of laser pointer incidents in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Saarbrücken have spiked in recent weeks. One particular incident where a laser pointer caused a “disturbance” is under investigation by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation (BFU), the organisation reported.

“In our assessment this is very dangerous,” DFS spokesperson Kristina Kelek said on Thursday.

“It’s like a lightning strike,” pilots’ union Cockpit spokesperson Jörg Handwerg said, explaining that at nighttime people's pupils are dilated, and a sudden flash of targeted light can be blinding and deadly.

Landing is the most delicate operation of a flight, Handwerg said, adding that pilots are in a “phase of highest concentration” during which any distraction could cause an accident. When someone shines a laser into the cockpit at this time, many pilots are forced to abort their landing attempt and re-approach the runway, he said.

Interfering with train, ship or air traffic with a laser is a crime that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in Germany. It’s not a new phenomenon – officials in the US and Australia have also reported an increasing number of cases in the last two decades.

The increase has likely occurred because laser pointers are cheaper and easier to acquire than ever before.

Because catching a laser attacker in the act is difficult, Handwerg suggested that government officials institute regulations similar to those for “other weapons,” because “when aimed at people this is definitely a weapon” he said.

what are we gonna do? outlaw lasers just like the gov't outlawed paintball ("war games")?? these devices have other practical/beneficial…
@Psypher Short answer, yes

The point is not about the practical/beneficial uses it is about a quick win for the politicos in solving this problem, but it should be.

Very few politicians really think about the implications of their actions, they just look for the easy way out (the quick win). Next the politicians will outlaw knives (all types), axes, hammers, screw drivers, and continuing down the line to anything made of hard plastic or metal, stones, etc. Where does it stop?

Where the hell are people shooting these lasers from? You can't get within 500 meters of a landing plan, I can't see how people are shooting lasers in there. Is this a wind up?

At Hamburg airport the large open-air "holiday" car park is right under the approach to RWY 33. I grant you that RWY 33 is not used much for landing but if that were the case you are right under the approach & planes are rather low there (I estimate under 500'). IMHO you could get close to the other runways if you were so inclined.

Why would IR screw with the ILS? please explain.

getting a good "shot" at the cockpit is doable in HAM on 15/33. 05/23 would be a pain in the ass as you would need to get on a roof to get a good view. I wonder if anyone has tried it from the cafe/bridge, can't get better than that, raised platform and all. of course it would be shut down the next day

i cant understand the umpah, what laserpointer has that wattage to have an effective range of at least 500m?

You don't need to be that close if you have a powerful enough laser, and those are not hard to come by these days.

Arguably, lasers constructed in such a way that they can be used in a directed manner to blind people already are outlawed by the War Weapons Control Law (KWKG), as long as they have sufficient power to potentially cause permanent blindness (Class IIIb, IV). At least that's one way to read the law.

And yes, the Radiation Protection Commission (interior ministry agency) has been trying to get the government to ban any laser pointers above Class II for over ten years now. Laser pointers that fall under the - legal - class IIIA in the US are classified as IIIB in Germany.

The problem does not lie with people using 'laser pointers'(like the idiots that go to pop concerts to blind the musicians)as these devices are simply not strong enough at distance.

The problem comes from Joe Bloggs the plane spotter. The 50 year old single man who still lives with his mother and has spent his hard earnt pocket money on a 300 euro laser range finder so that he can know how far away an aircraft is before peeing his pants with sheer excitement!!!

The solution is simple and relatively inexpensive. A worldwide cull of all plane spotters!!!

Other than that aircrew can be issued with relatively cheap laser safe goggles/glasses which can be donned before final approach.

Yes, some sort of large silverized reflective glasses for aviators.

No, not some sort of silverised reflective glasses............they already exist. I have trialled laser safety goggles.

Is it possible to locate the location of the emitter as a pilot? pilot could tell the tower where its coming from and the "Bundesgrenzschutz/police could for once get out of the car and catch these idiots.

heres a good one from youtube concerning a hearing problem on landing.

Of course, everyone has overlooked the real danger of these laser pointers see here
I have a couple of 300mW laser pointers which I bought recently in Hong Kong which can easily illuminate objects 2-3 km away - I've proved this at nighttime in the mountains. Even in daylight you can see the laser spot on a wall over 500m away. I've no doubt that if shone directly into someone's eyes, especially at close range they could cause temporary or even maybe permanent blindness, and for this reason I am VERY careful when operating them. So far as I know possession of such a device is perfectly legal, but without a license operation is not.

I'm not sure that'd be appropriate given TT's high ranking on Google.

a "weapon"??? In the right (wrong) hands even a spoon can be a weapon. A class IIIb laser in the face isn't fun but thats a law enforcem…
It's already outlawed. If you're near an airport you're not even allowed to carry it.

Using it, by pointing it at airplanes will get you around ten years in prison.

That's what i just heard yestereday.

Pilots should be allowed to take defensive action as demonstrated in the training video in the link below.

The landing is the phase where pilots (regardless of what they are flying) have to concentrate the most. There are no "cycles" available to scan the whole field of view for people who might or might not be favourably disposed towards you.

I think TexMex has posted somewhere about this before concerning the newest ILS generation(plus autopilot) that can actually land a plane.
About 13 years ago I was sat on the jump seat in the cockpit of a LH 737 from Duesseödorf to Manchester and after a while the captain asked me if I'd experienced a fully-automatic landing. My answer was "no" so after consulting with the 1st officer the captain proceeded to explain how they do this & when we came out of the clouds about 12NM short of Ringway he engaged the autopilot & sat with his left hand close to the control column & his right hand behind the throttles so he could apply full power if necessary. The plane sat perfectly on the RWY, opened the lift dump etc.....
