Bavarian brewers strike

In terrifying news for Weißbier fans, Bavarian beer brewers staged temporary strikes on Monday morning in an ongoing wage dispute with employers in the southern German state.

"That’s the yellow card for the employers, after which the beer will run short," head of food, beverages and catering trade union NGG Freddy Adjan warned.

Some 40 workers at Munich’s beloved Augustiner brewery walked off their jobs at 5:30 am, along with 50 at the Spaten brewery and others at the Kulmbacher brewery, the union reported.

The union is asking for a six percent pay increase for some 10,000 workers in the Bavarian brewing industry. Workers at the Allgäuer breweries in Marktoberdorf and Leuterschach staged warning strikes for several hours on Friday after employers offered just a 1.7 percent increase in the second round of negotiations.

"More strikes will follow in the coming days," NGG said in a statement.
