Porsche to hire 1,000 workers in Leipzig

German sports car maker Porsche has announced it would hire more than 1,000 workers for its plant in Leipzig starting immediately.

The announcement comes a few months before production starts on a new Porsche model called the Macan, a crossover SUV. The jobs require professional qualifications in body construction, painting, and quality assurance for tasks including assembly, ultrasonic testing and metal sheet forming.
Besides the 1,000 production workers, the location in the eastern state of Saxony is also looking to employ 400 engineers for the planning of the expansion of the plant.
The company is going to invest €500 million to convert the Leipzig facility into a plant with its own paint shop and body assembly hall, which will make it the biggest construction project in the history of Porsche, which is headquartered in Stuttgart.
But competition for the coveted positions is sure to be fierce.
"We have received 16,500 applications already," said Siegfried Bülow, chairman of the executive board.
Porsche, which currently has a workforce of 1,150 at its Leipzig location, will double its employees when the new vacancies are filled. The plant currently builds the Cayenne SUV and the four-door Panamera saloon.
