Deutsche Bahn set to rake in record profits

Germany's rail operator Deutsche Bahn is expecting to record its biggest-ever profits in the coming year, despite the threat of an economic downturn hanging over the country, a leaked report shows.

According to an internal report seen by the Tagesspiegel newspaper, the Bahn is aiming to make €2.75 billion before tax in 2012, a fifth more than in the current year.

A third of the profits are expected to be gleaned from the 34,000 kilometres of railtracks that the operator owns, while another third will come from the state-subsidized regional transport system.

Deutsche Bahn is even planning to extend its profit margin to €3.85 billion by 2016, the report said.

A spokesman for Deutsche Bahn refused to comment on the figures, because planning for the next year will be discussed by the railway's executive board next week.

Sure its not much, but for a company to make record profits it's a nice way to reward its customers.

Can you say how much does your new BahnCard cost? I am trying to get a feel for what €2 represents as regards the overall cost.
