New in theaters this week, The Sessions is an indie drama based on an essay by Mark O’Brien, a paralyzed poet who hired a sex surrogate to lose his virginity. Winner of the Audience Award (US Dramatic) at Sundance, where it premiered, The Sessions boasts impressive performances from John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy and a strong screenplay from writer and director Ben Lewin. Hailed by critics as simultaneously tender and touching, The Sessions is an optimistic consideration of sex, fear and physical disability.
