A site-specific spacial collage. A new score for Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece Metropolis. A portrait concert of Japanese-American composer Ken Ueno in the Jewish Museum's glass courtyard. One of the largest new music festivals in Europe, MaerzMusik begins its delightfully varied 10-day program this week.

Nan Goldin - Berlin Work

Berlin is arguably the most creative metropolis on the planet. But it wouldn't be the artistic haven it is today without those exquisite characters who paraded through Berlin's dingy underground in the 1980s and 1990s. Photographer Nan Goldin ran with that colorful crowd, documenting their wild ways on her frequent visits. See shots of actress Tilda Swinton, artist Kiki Smith and other luminaries at the Berlinische Galerie before the exhibition ends next Monday.

Mafrouza - A Five-Part Documentary Film Cycle

Between 2001 and 2004, French director Emmanuelle Demoris spent two years in Mafrouza, a slum in Alexandria, Egypt, which was demolished in 2007. The result was a five-part film cycle that chronicles the lives of a handful of residents. Get a glimpse into the daily life of the inhabitants of the district this weekend when Kino Arsenal screens all five instalments.

New Music to Old Films - Mizoguchi Kenji: Taki no Shiraito

Japanese composer Misato Mochizuki combines electroacoustic sounds with Eastern and Western instruments in her score for the 1933 Kenji Mizoguchi film Taki no Shiraito. Watch the black and white drama unfold on the big screen while the Nieuw Ensemble interprets Ms. Mochizuki's evocative soundtrack.

The Low Anthem

This Providence, Rhode Island band recorded their fourth album Smart Flesh in an old pasta factory.
