Indian schools introduce German lessons

Hundreds of schools in India are being signed up to teach their children German, in a concerted effort involving some of Germany's top technical universities and the Goethe language Institute.

Supported by the foreign ministry, the project has been designed to cultivate a new generation of Indian students and workers.

So far, 300 state-run schools have begun teaching German as their primary foreign language, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported on Thursday.

This feeds into a long-term specific focus on recruiting “international talent in the areas of maths, IT, natural sciences and technology,” said TU9 – a group made up of nine of Germany's top technical universities – and the Goethe Institute.

If all goes according to plan, this could mean that in the next ten years over a million Indians could be German speakers.

Just two years ago the Indian education ministry decided to introduce a language other than Hindi, English and Sanskrit into the curriculum. Officials picked German over French, Chinese, Russian or Spanish. They may well be introduced at a later date though, the paper said.

The aim is to get 1,000 state schools involved in the project but 2017, but recruiting teachers has not been easy, project leader Puneet Kaur from the Indian Goethe Institute told the paper.

Teachers would only offered €290 a month – around 20,000 rupees – which for German-speaking Indians is not a lot, considering many learn the language to go into higher-paying jobs in business.

This makes recruiting difficult, and “it is not like we have 1,000 German teachers to hand,” said Kaur. She said that they were targeting universities and language school graduates nonetheless.

India's size and economic situation also made travelling to schools and introducing the scheme in more rural areas difficult, she explained.

I wish people people had a little more understanding of this global world. Instead of healthy competition and collaboration , some of the insecured "self-proclaimed" gurus end up showing their ignorance. Yes, developing countries have struggled a lot and some of them like India have taken the job to work hard instead of pointing fingers on some westerners who have been engaged in foul play.

I am sure it will not make sense to discuss anything with bunch of closed minded, insecure guys, but I will still like to let them know that we better learn to work with our friends in east otherwise you know where are we heading to...

So grow up guys ....either end up hating everyone and miss this train to globalization or join the moment ....and help yourself.

Great facts and figures ,however there is a problem with overpopulation as you will soon overtake China.

There is also a major problem with poverty with so many of the population going hungry ,there is sectarian violence based on religion.

And finally there is still a caste system, so never mind grow up how about catch up with the 21st century .

It does not matter where you come from, but the killing due to religion was started by someone in Germany and resulted in the WWII.

In the 21st century the biggest power is Human Resource, else most non-productive (Human Reproduction) European and western countries would be already listed by the UN in the list of countries towards extinction, if foreigners would have not migrated.

There is still a church system in most of Europe. Christians all over the world do not celebrate Christmas on 25th December, but hindus of various caste celebrate the festival on the same day.

Germany was not ruled by foreigners and looted for 200 years, else the whole of Germany would not be better than the eastern part of Germany.

The Indian customer service is far better than Most of the EU countries where even the customer service do not work 24x7.

All Mobile customer service in India is available in Hindi, English and the local language. But in EU people only know their mother tounge.

In India even illiterate can speak their mother tounge.

Just one example of who is ahead when it comes to customer service.

Yes the population may soon overtake china, just like China overtook Germany and became the largest exporter.
