Teachers 'need help to fight youth extremism'

Attempts to prevent young Germans from getting into right-wing extremism are failing because of poor coordination and sporadic financing say experts.

Though all German children discuss the Third Reich as part of their school curriculum, not enough is being taught about modern ideas of human rights and discrimination – and teachers are often poorly equipped to counteract the extreme right wing’s aggressive recruiting of young people, the experts said.

“Short term projects which are time-limited from year to year are not enough,” said Eva-Maria Stange, a member of Saxony’s state legislature. “We need a stable structure.”

The November revelation of a neo-Nazi terror cell – three people are suspected of killing a policewoman and at least 9 people with a migration background between 2000 and 2007 – has heightened calls for authorities to do more to prevent young people from being lured into a life of extremism.

Finding solutions will take some effort, said the experts who have called for a consistent, large-scale effort to coordinate a fight against extremism among youth.

Freiburg University of Education sociologist Albert Scherr said there should be a federally funded foundation that spearheads anti-discrimination education efforts. Scherr said schools should incorporate more human rights and anti-racism education into the core curriculum.

Hans-Gerd Jaschke, an expert on right-wing extremists at the Berlin School of Economics and Law also said a rethink of how children are educated both in and out of school is necessary.

“The education in schools is very much fixated on the theme of the Third Reich and National Socialism,” he said, calling for more extensive training of teachers.

But the tentacles of the extreme right also extend into leisure activities such as sports teams, where funding has been cut by 20 percent over the years, Jaschke said.

“The strength of the right scene is the weakness of democratic youth work that is the responsibility of the state,” he said.

The key to winning this fight, said Thomas Krüger, president of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, could be better coordination.

“We must systematically identify important prevention projects and fund them sustainably,” he said. “Federal and state governments must cooperate more closely and better coordinate the finances and contents of their programs.”

No matter how extremism is slowed down, it will never be stopped and will survive.....Read "The Trumpet" magazine.....It's free and it is educational and may save future lives....

This is not an attempt to fight "extremism" it's an attempt to shut people up leftist disagree with. I cannot stand the neo-Nazi movement because it is evil but no more than the extreme left. Upwards of 100 million people have died at the hands of Communist and Socialist, yet scant print is dedicated to this.

Larry's a little out there on the lack of print re commie/socialist deaths, BUT I think he is smack on with regard to the Freiburg sociologist's mindset -- as well illustrated by The Local's photo selection. "Bleiben bunt" has a whole connotation to it that's significantly different from not being a Nazi. Society has a right to set goals and make policy choices about what agenda is advanced in its schools, but I am not sure German society has really made a choice to "bleib bunt". However, Frau Stange (former SED member, and former teacher) and others probably have a good point that schools could use more help to at least keep kids from not being Nazis, especially in the Erzgebirge.

look at the burning cars, look at the burning tracks, look at the damage done by hackers, look at the violence perpetrated against die Polizei. look at the violence at protests. Look at the Eco Terrorism. Look at the violence against Americans. look at the intolerance for anybody who does not share the German 'Progressive' point of view.

I see a lot of Extremism in Germany.

Where is the march against islam? Against violence to women and children, to circumcision, honour-killings, putting the burkah on small girls, the extremist views preached in the mosques against our western way of life, against violence agains German children by immigrant children in German schools? (google the videos).

The reason the right-wing is on the rise, is because the left side has opened up the borders, introduced islam into the west and are trying to silence anyone who doesn't agree - ususally by calling them racist, nazi etc. If you call someone nazi long enough....they become one.

These protestors should first change their own politics - then the right wing will dissapear naturally. If I beat my neighbour and he beats me back. Can I go in a protest march against my "violent" neighbour? Of course not, that would be silly. So are the protestors in this article.

I agree with the previous article by Henry1544. I am British and wish that I had left my country earlier to live and find work overseas, but I¦#39;m now too old. I would prefer to be a foreigner living in a foreign country rather than in my own. The UK has become a multicultural hell-hole with millions of Sikhs, Muslims and African Negroes etc colonizing the country. The British people were never consulted. When I go into the library, for example, there are foreigners everywhere backslapping and talking in their languages I find them aggressive and loud-mouthed. Newly arrived immigrants seem to have the smug expression of ¦quot;I¦#39;m as British as you are!¦quot; and we have to shut up. The way of life and culture in my country is being destroyed thanks to the hypocritical middle-class power-elite. If a native Briton is killed by an African Negro or schoolgirls are groomed and raped by Muslims it is hushed up, but when a foreigner is killed in the UK we never stop hearing about it. The recent Stephen Lawrence re-trial is a case in point. The so-called fight against ¦#39;racism¦#39; or ¦#39;extremism¦#39; is just another ploy to disenfranchise and brainwash the gullible electorate.

Wars almost always spawn from places where there is a lack of diversity. This is what must be taught!!!
01:10 January 10, 2012 by lewis69
Honestly whats the bigger treat here the nazies who killed like 20 people over the last 25 years or the Islamic crazies that where behind the Spain subway bombings 9/11 in the states last year 18 people where arrested where Iive in Canada who where going to behead the primeminister and blow up the parliment building!

Not to mention all the foiled plots we have to protect the public here even if it means some times looking a little harder at one religious group I know its discrimination but open your eyes.

@ PierceArrow what are you smoking man?!!!!!!!!

I think Davetherave is correct. While I may not agree with right-wing extremes, I see the same thing happening here in the US in the next few years. "Diversity" is a liberal theme applied to others. I would ask how many persons of diverse ethnic background are neighbors of Nancy Pelosi? People seem to be happier with other persons of similar background. Here in the US racial tension is such that it has reversed to 1960's level. When you see a different skin color it means that they probably have a feeling of hate or distrust against you if you don't look like them. Others may disagree with what I have said but I would counter that they must live in "gated communities" like Nancy and the other political elites throughout the world who make decisions that WE have to endure, not THEM. Let's concentrate on current murderers, ISLAM, and we wouldn't have the neo's who seem to be pushing back against the waves of "protected class of persons" that are coming to OUR countries and stealing OUR future and commiting crimes against OUR people. All in the name of a social experiment called "Diversity".

Not only right-wing extremism. Also racism that I can clearly see within the the groups of Turkish and Arab immigrats' children. Islamic fundementalism, rightist thoughts and racism also from Germans towards the others. It has gone out of control.

The result will be visible only in about 10 years from now.

I think if Europeans want democracy then it's time they demanded a plebiscite on issues like mass immigration. People were never consulted on multi-culturalism or migration of low level skilled people, or those who came as 'guest workers' but just stayed and stayed and would or could not fit into the local culture. Immigration to date has been anti-democratic, dictated by the need for cheap labor, with little thought to cultural consequences. If there is youth extremism today, its seeds were planted in this soil.
