Our favourite Berlin places

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Here at Oh-Berlin we always try to recommend places we like personally and have experienced for ourselves. As a result we have come up with suggestions of places to see and things to do in Berlin that we have enjoyed.

The Topography of Terror is a free permanent exhibition and one of the best documentations of the Nazi reign. The Hohenschönhausen Stasi Prison tour was one of the best tours we have taken in Berlin. It really captures the chilling and dark realities of how the Stasi operated.

Good coffee and sublime cheesecake is why we love Five Elephant on Reichenberger Straße. Excellent coffee, service and ambience also at Lerchen & Eulen. For an indulgent breakfast head to  Café Einstein for a little slice of elegant and sumptuous old Vienna.

Where do we like to party? Kater Holzig is always good fun and Berghain typically intense on our occassional Sunday afternoon visits. We also like Dunker on a Sunday night, make sure you get in before midnight for free entry.

We love C/O Berlin which always has great photographic exhibitions throughout the year. If you enjoy ballet then the Deutsche Oper Berlin should guarantee you an enjoyable evening.

Relaxation and wellness treatments

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Big city life can be very stressful, just ask your average London, New York or Paris resident. One of the great things about touching down in Berlin, if you do come from a stress inducing city, is that your stress levels automatically drop considerably.

But even given the typically laid back charm of Berlin, being able to relax and be pampered a little is always a bonus. So why not take a rest from the city and recharge your batteries at Sri Dhanvantari – Centre for Ayurveda and Wellness in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg.

Ayurveda, literally translated, means “knowledge of life,” and is the oldest medical science on record. Its practices were first put down in writing more than 5000 years ago. The massages with warm scented oils, for instance, are often used to relax and rejuvenate the body. All massages are conducted in private rooms on heated loungers. Afterwards, you can also indulge in an Ayurvedic steam bath.

You can choose from a number of massages and spa treatments and the best thing is that Oh-Berlin.com is offering 15% off all listed treatments and massages. For further info and full article on Sri Dhanvantari check out the Oh-Berlin blog.

Berlin 2012 in pictures

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012

As we head towards December, Christmas and the ushering in of a new year our mind drifts back to reflecting on the last year in Berlin. We thought it would be a good moment to share some of our best memories and pictures of experiencing the fascinating and charming city of Berlin.

An artist that caught our eye was Berlin based Kirstine Roepstorff. She would exhibit as part of the Gesamtkunstwerk: New Art from Germany exhibition that showed at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

It was also a year that we welcomed guest blogger Sherry Otts to Berlin and to one of our wonderful apartments.  It was great fun having Sherry over and we had a ball taking a fab bike tour with our friends at Fat Tire Bike Tours and visiting fantastic sights such as the Stasi Prison and Spree Park.

We had one of our best days out when we visited the Reinickendorf district and was also impressed with Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

We enjoyed compiling a list of great international cuisine in the city and maybe put on a few extra pounds in the process.

Alas we reached autumn which brought all those magical new colours into our lives.

We hope you enjoyed checking out some of our best pics from the last year. Want to see more? Check out our Oh-Berlin blog and you can also catch us on Facebook and Twitter.

Performing arts in Berlin

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

In a hectic week or so Oh-Berlin completed a cultural odyssey in checking out some of the best performing art venues in the city. Here´s what we found out.

We had never been to the opera and ballet before so this would be totally new ground. We took in a production of Die Bajadere, which had an Indian theme to it, which we really enjoyable. Seeing thirty or so perfectly poised ballerinas moving with such grace in intricate dance formations is an impressive sight. The Deutsche Oper is a fantastic looking venue with the interior and design particularly handsome.   The stage designs and changes were quick and looked great. If good art has the power to lift your spirits then a night of ballet at the Deutsche Oper definitely met that criteria for us.

A chance to see the world famous Berlin Philharmonic at the Philiharmonie made for a special evening. An evident warm glow exuding from all those at the Philharmonie.

Of we went to see Madame Butterfly at Im Schiller Theatre in what was a pretty rousing performance. The main auditorium is also something we really liked as it had a cosy and intimate feel to it for visitors.

Nikolaiviertel

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

The district of Nikolaiviertel is the oldest part of Berlin and has conserved all the features and characteristics of a city dating back to 1237.

It really is like stepping back in time walking around the area and evokes a similar experience to that of walking around the Old Town square in Prague.

Some of the oldest and most interesting buildings in Berlin are located in Nikolaivierte. Many have been converted into museums. For instance Nikolaikirche is the oldest church in the city with natural stone foundations, although it has undergone several alterations over the centuries.

Other interesting places of interest in the area include:

  The Knoblauchhaus is located in the only surviving 18th Century house in Berlin’s centre and belongs to the city museum (Stadtmuseum) offering special events and free entry.

  The Ephraim-Palais is a palace that has been converted into a museum, with three floors of exhibitions covering the history of art and culture in Berlin. The architecture is quite simply amazing!

  Zille Museum houses the art of Heinrich Zille, an observer in Berlin. His works were created in quill and on camera, recreating the atmosphere of Berlin in the XIX century.

  Hanfmuseum (Hemp Museum) reproduces ancient cultivation, including the use of fibres for textiles and medicinal products.

A slightly alternative weekend in Berlin

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

So you grabbed a little min-break or weekend in Berlin but what to see and do?

Obviously Berlin has a lot of rich history and there are plenty of major sights and attractions, but if you wanted to see a slightly alternative Berlin, away from the must do and sees on the checklist, we have a few suggestions for you.

You will notice lots of street art and graffiti in Berlin and Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain are good places to see some eye-catching examples.  Like the huge astronaut on the side of a building on Mariannenstraße or other grand scale and slightly provocative street art like “brothers”on Curvystraße.

If you happen to be in Berlin on a Tuesday or Friday you should really take in the Turkish Market along the Maybachufer. The market is also in the Kreuzberg area which has a large Turkish community and is also home to students and artists. Over the last few years the area has become one of the liveliest places in the city.

Berlin offers a wide selection of international cuisine in places around the city but if you are looking for something a little unusual and delicious the Massai African Restaurant in the Prenzlauer Berg district will fit the bill. A chance to try such typically rare meats such as ostrich, wildebeest, zebra in fun and appealing surroundings.
