People in Hamburg and Lower Saxony are having more sex than anyone else in Germany, according to a survey released by dating website Elite Partner.

Pollsters asked 10,000 people from all over Germany just how often they were getting it on.

24 percent of people living in Hamburg in Niedersachsen said they have sex numerous times per week, but only 13.7 percent of Berliners could say the same.

Rhineland-Palatinate is the worst state in the country for sexual activity, as only 10.8 percent of people are at it on a regular basis.

A possible reason for this could be fact that the accent for the region, Palatinate (Pfälzisch), was voted the least sexy accent in the German speaking world back in 2013.

Bavarian emerged as the sexiest German accent, it doesn't appear to be helping Bavarians seduce one another, as only 18.3 percent reported having regular sex.

Another recent study revealed that East Germans are more likely to film themselves in bed than their western neighbours, but Brandenburg (14.9 percent), Mecklenburg Vorpommen(16.5 percent) and Saxony Anhalt (14.1 percent) were quite low down for people having regular sex.

Less than half happy with sex lives

The polling team also asked some penetrating questions about just what goes on in the bedroom.

They found that only 43 percent of the population is satisfied with their sex lives, with the figure only slightly higher if you only include people in a relationship.

Couples in their twenties are most satisfied with their sex lives, but as people get older men become less content than women: only 46 percent of men in their thirties in a stable relationship are totally happy with their love life, compared with 53 percent of women.

The level of satisfaction among singles is roughly equal between men and women, but women tend to feel more content with sex when in a relationship than men. A quarter of men in relationships are even unsatisfied with their sex lives.

This could be because 75 percent of men expect good sex from their partner, rating it as a key element in a relationship, whereas the figure is only 64 percent for women.

On the other hand, a higher percentage of women than men want mutual trust and an intellectual connection from a relationship.

Another finding was that the biggest killer of sexual activity in relationships is having children.

Couples who have had a kid have sex much less frequently than those without them: around half of childless couples have sex at least once a week, but only a third with kids do so.
