The 22-year-old arrived at the station on Karl-Marx-Strasse in the Neukölln district of the city at around midnight and approached the night counter looking for something to eat.

Staff refused to call him a taxi after he failed to enter his PIN correctly on the credit card terminal.

After wandering aimlessly around the forecourt for a few minutes, he took a fuel hose and began spraying petrol onto the pump and a waiting car with three people inside.

The driver quickly started the vehicle and escaped, while the petrol station staff shut off the fuel pumps and called the police.

The drunk man then knelt down and tried to light the fuel which he had sprayed around the forecourt.

But he failed to light the fuel with his cigarette lighter and police were able to arrest him.

He was examined by doctors at a nearby hospital and will be prosecuted for creating a fire risk.
