The statistical probability was one in 59 million, but a German man from the Rhine Main area beat the odds and won the €46 million Euro Lottery jackpot – the largest amount ever won by an individual in Germany.

Lottery officials from Lotto Hessen made the announcement in Wiesbaden on Saturday, but said they are keeping the man’s identity a strict secret.

They did say that the winner is in his mid-thirties and was the only one to get all seven numbers correct.

The numbers for the Euro Lottery – which is played in 14 countries, were drawn on Friday in Helsinki.

The winning pot was not only the highest jackpot but also the largest single win in German lottery history. The previous biggest take was €45.4 million, won in December 2007 by three players.

The previous largest single winner was €37.7 million from an October 2006 jackpot won by a 41-year-old male nurse from North Rhine Westphalia.

The Euro Lottery started in March 2012 and is played by about 243 million people.
