The clocks moving forward on Sunday caught out one of Germany’s top politicians who slept through a telephone appointment with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Horst Seehofer, the leader of Merkel’s Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU) admitted on Friday in the Donaukurier he was late for his phone call with the Chancellor because he forgot the clocks had changed for German summer time.

When the alarm clock on his mobile phone rang he stayed in bed. Only when it continued to beep did he realize the clocks had moved forward an hour and it was almost 8am not 7am.

His conversation with Merkel, who is famous for her punctuality, began at 8.07am instead of 8am.

Bavaria’s economic minister Ilse Aigner wants to start a campaign against changing the clocks.

“I told Ilse Aigner, you can count on it, we will support you,” Seehofer told the paper.
