As North America freezes, Germany is in the throes of an unusually warm January. National weather service the DWD has predicted highs of 15C this week.

The low pressure system swirling over the other side of the Atlantic is having little effect on Germany, which on Monday had highs of 15C in the west and 10C in the east and causing the country to wonder what had become of winter.

On Monday night almost all of the country will feel rain at some point – except for south of the Danube, where it will just be foggy. General lows will be between 10C and 0C in more rural, southern areas. In the Alps it could be -4C.

Clouds will cover the upper northern regions by Tuesday morning, with the odd, light shower. There will be more sunshine around the central hilly parts and around the Alps. The southwest will remain foggy from the night gone, and colder than the rest of the countries with a high of 6C. Elsewhere could read 15C.

Tuesday night will see rain spreading to central, southwestern and eastern states. In the north, rain clouds from the day will thicken, bringing heavier showers. Temperatures will rest between 9C and 4C except for the very south, where lows will be between 5C and 1C.

Wednesday will be a little rainy, particularly in the north and northeast. As the morning progresses, the whole of eastern Germany will see showers. Bavaria will be foggy but everywhere else should be dry, if not a little sunny. DWD expects highs of up to 15C in the west, but for most around 9C.

A dry and cloudy night is on the cards for Thursday. The south will be a little clearer than the north, with a chance of fog. Lows will be between 9C and 0C around the Alps.

As Thursday arrives, so will very dense cloud cover. It should stay dry though, with the unusual 15C-highs continuing. The wind could also pick up, with gale force blasts expected to howl up and down the coast.
