Eight top lakes for escaping the city
The heatwave looks set to return with a vengeance on Thursday, likely sending everyone plunging into the nearest lake to cool off. That's why our Local list this week takes a tour of the best shores Germany has to offer.
Everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect lake at which to spend a hot day escaping from the city.
Some will look for a large beach where they can soak up some sun in company, while others prefer to retreat to quieter, shady shorelines away from the crowds.
When it comes to lake swimming, hardy types may want to wade straight into deep, cool water and swim right across to the other shore, the very thought of which might leave less courageous paddlers scurrying for the safety of their beach towels.
But preference aside, there's one thing everyone should pay attention to when taking a dip this summer - water quality.
German motoring club ADAC recently took samples at 41 of the nation's most popular swimming spots, testing for nasty germs dangerous to lake-goers.
So as the DWD weather service predicts a big comeback for hairdryer-in-your-face heat this weekend, we take you on a tour of the swans and ugly ducklings of Germany's many lakes.
