When Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) convinces the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to join him in reclaiming the kingdom of Erebor, an epic journey begins. The two pass through treacherous lands, battling orcs and goblins and meeting sorcerers and shapshifters along the way. Bilbo's encounter with the creature Gollum allows the once-simple hobbit to begin to understand his own courage and cunning when he gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring. A ring that is tied to the fate of Middle Earth in ways Bilbo cannot imagine.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is the first chapter of the latest trio of films based on the fantasy novels of J.R. R. Tolkien. Director Peter Jackson reunites with cast and crew from the acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy to bring us this highly anticipated prequel to the series. “The Hobbit” is sure to recall, if not outdo, the thrilling plots and remarkable visual effects from Jackson's earlier Tolkien adaptations.
