The healthcare industry could create tens of thousands of new jobs this year, the German Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry said in a report published on Tuesday.

Professionals in the pharmaceutical and medicine production areas, in nursing homes and in hospitals see their industries growing faster than other sectors of the economy, the group said.

“In the healthcare sector there will be 70,000 new jobs created this year,” the trade group’s president, Hans Heinrich Driftmann, said in an analysis published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily newspaper. Additionally the sector is planning to expand its investments.

However as in other sectors of the German economy, healthcare is suffering from a lack of qualified personnel, the report said. Some 43 percent of companies in the sector said a lack of qualified workers is a risk, Driftmann noted.

About four million people are employed in Germany in the healthcare sector, the trade group said.
