Insurance agent tops list of unpopular jobs

Published: 31 Mar 2010 08:10 CET

Communications agent Faktenkontor and market research institute Toluna asked 1,000 Germans which jobs they couldn’t imagine doing under any circumstances. Almost 50 percent said the thought of being an insurance agent was the least palatable option.

The main reason for rejecting a career in insurance sales was a general lack of social esteem associated with the vocation, poll respondents said. Just three percent thought the job would garner respect and 75 percent used the word “swindle” in their explanations.

Almost 30 percent of the survey participants also said they would strictly advise their children against taking up the insurance trade.

Meanwhile going into politics was the second least popular job in Germany, according to the study. Thirty percent said they could not see themselves becoming a politician, followed closely by 29 percent who said being a long-haul trucker was the least attractive job they could imagine.

These vocations were followed by street sweepers, farmers, elementary school teachers, and custodial workers.

Despite negative feelings toward the banking industry following the global financial crisis, only 15 percent said they would refuse to be bankers.

Doctors and journalists took the final two positions in the least-loved professions in the country.

1. Insurance agent

2. Politician

3. Long-haul trucker

4. Street sweeper

5. Farmer

6. Elementary school teacher

7. Custodial worker

8. Banker

9. Doctor

10. Journalist
